GPS Antenna Mounting Location

I recently purchased a Lowrance LMS-525C DF depthfinder\GPS unit. It has a LGC-3000 external antenna. Where’s the best place to mount the antenna on a Lund 1775 tiller?

I’ve heard that it should be at the front of the boat so it’s not affected by other electronic signals. I’ve also heard it should be in the back of the boat, closer to the transducer for a more accurate location on the Lakemaster map.

    Thanks,
    Joel

Mine is located towards the front of my boat and I never have any problems. A buddy of mine sometimes has problems picking up satalites with his located at the back of the boat. I think his big motor gets in the way of the lower angle satilites at times.

Mine is located towards the rear…about a foot from the transom. Ranger doesn’t have a full width splashwell so they have some step pads in the corners. This is where they mounted it and haven’t had any issues with reception and get WAAS reception without any problems as well. It’s also only a few feet from the locator/GPS too.

I think one of the things that you have to watch for is VHF antennas and their location near a GPS antenna, or so I’ve been told.

Having the antenna in the rear of the boat may result in slightly better speed readings since it doesn’t swing as much as the bow when you’re back trolling, etc.

I used a silicone type adhesive to mount mine. If I have to move it or take the unit out I don’t have any drill holes in my boat.

Mine is right outside of my windshield next to my VHF ant. So far, so good.

Welcome to the IDA, Joel! Let us know how it worked out.
