Is there any place or a post here one can learn about leadcore trolling and reasoning behind it.
I have done very little trolling (to boring for me ) in my past fishing years ,mainly pike.
I always hear people talk about it and would like to learn more about it,even tho I would rather jig all day
Maybe I can learn a new way to catch walleyes and others.

I’m a leadcore novice, but I like to troll just to have another way of catching fish. If you are a serious troller it is not as boring as one would think. There is a ton of thought and strategy behind it. At the right time it can put a ton of fish in the boat and some dandies also.

Don’t get me wrong, I love jigging and rigging, they are my 2 favorite ways to catch eyes, however there are times that call for trolling and sometimes a little less intense fishing is good.

I hear you Trumar. I would rather sit and jig all day than troll, but I also realize that it can be a very effective way to put fish in the boat. I to am trying to learn more about the art of trolling. I am taking a day trip with a more than gererous IDAer on Sunday to learn some of the basics.

Lead core is just another way to get your plugs down deep where the fish are, but certainly not the only option for doing so. Snap weights, 3 way rigs and even the right plugs running alone will all get you down to great depths for walleyes. I used to think crankbait fishing was boring too, but today would have to count it as my favorite technique. Much more thought to how and why than what you might think. Good luck.

Trolling and a day on the water is suppose to be relaxing…its the tournament days when you have dedicated your prefishing and found that trolling is what they want and come tournament day they don’t bite. But I would say for somebody to start leadcore fishing spend a day on Pepin and don’t plan on catching the fish they will come natural. 18 lb leadcore line is what most guys use with a swivel and about 7-10 foot snell to a snap for the #5 or #7 shad or jointed shad. You set out enough line so you can see that your bait is ticking the bottom now and then pull them about 2.4-3.0mph and you will love it.

How much eighteen pound leadcore has to be let out to get a # 5 shadrap down to around 16 feet? Just curious!

Boat speed and river current effect the sink rate, but in general 6 feet of line out will drop one foot. So to get a #5 down 16 feet would take about 80-90 feet (3 colors) of line out.

I pull alot of leadcore and I have to say it is one of my favorite ways to fish! I personally feel I have way more control of my lures.. I know if my lures is running correctly just by watching the line, You can tell when the smallest weed is somewhat fowling the plug. Versus tring to feel a lure with 150 ft out!

I can change my lure depth just by the slightest ajustment of the motor!!

You can bring a lure up and down alot faster also by reeling in or letting line out..

    Control Control Control!!

I have seen leadcore in action and I am a believer now. I have heard that leadcore will cancel the dive of some lures. So does that mean a Deep Reef Runner will be at the same depth as a shad rap behind the same amount of line? I know there is no reason to run a deep diver, but I am just throwing it out there. I have two trolling rod/reel combos sitting in the garage collecting dust, but I know what they are getting spooled up with now.

    B-Sander,
You made a believer out of me. Another necessity to spend more money on!!! Boy, does Dean like me! Those shortie rods are awesome for inside rods, thinking of getting another for hard line.

Maybe the best and quickest way to learn lead-coring or ANY technique you need to learn is via the PWT(choose an event that will feature what you want to learn) as a co-angler.

Or…hire a guide for day of lead-coring and you know the whole game…tackle needs and all. Nothing here will beat time on the water being taught hands on.
