Guys I am thinking of replacing my motor on my bass boat. I have a 200 yamaha Vmax HPDI (2001). Any thoughts on what I could get for the motor? What would I be looking at for a new 225 Yamaha Vmax HPDI with rigging. I know I can’t get actual numbers but just curious what other might think. It would be going on a Triton TR20

Sounds expensive, are you just looking for my hp or what?
If HP is what you want I guess I’d go with a hydro tech kit before I swapped motors, sure you’d have a modded ’01 (with more HP) versus a new one with a warranty, probably reccomend you running atleast middle grade gas too. Still an aweful lot of bang for the buck there….

I gotta stop thinking about these kits

I have not had any problems with the boat or motor but I am having trouble getting on plane. I went from a 24volt to 36 and added a four bank charger. extra weight is holding me back. Motor is 6 years old just kicking around ideas.

It can be hard to justify the cost of a brand new motor for what they get for them, but if you are happy with your boat and planning on keeping it for a long time, it might be worth it to you for warrantee factor. Chances are, if you try to sell your rig, you won’t get your money out of it. The only other thing I can tell you is to maybe look for a new prop. I see a lot of these speed freaks running Spinneli (sp) props and I am not sure if they are just made for lighter hulls like Bullet and Allison, but do a little research on it and it might be a way more cost effective way to get you out of the hole a little quicker. The obvious answer is to get a 4 blade, but you’ll probably lose some top end. Good luck and let me know if you want to sell your 200…I just might know a guy who might make an offer on it

Elaoborate on have trouble getting on plane. An extra TM Bat and 4 bank shouldn’t add enough weight to need a new motor. (Unless thats how a guy is selling it to the wife. ) As stated above it may be a quicker easier fix to re prop or there may be a greater issue with the motor.

With a tournament load full livewells I am struggling to get up on plane. I have lost a couple mph’s as well. Prop is dinged up a little bit what does it cost to ge a prop reworked? I appreciate the suggestions!

What prop are you running and how many RPM’s are you turning???

Dropping down a pitch size and running your engine closer to the rev limiter (if it’s not alreay) will be a more cost effective solution.

You can also install a cobra maine stabilizer (Cabelas has them for ~$100) – this will help your hole shot probem.

    Good luck!

Wow! You young guys just blow my mind! Bless you if this is a decision making question. Us old coots just shake our heads when we read this. No offense but there are a lot of other important decisions to make! Good fishing to you!

Yamaha upped the rev limiter to 6K in either ’05 or ’06.

I am guessing you are running a 25 pro series (25M) you may want to look at the VMax series – they have thicker blades and shouldn’t increase your RPM’s by more that 200 I am guessing if you ran a 23. The blade design is also a little different and made specifically to handle bass hulls.

    Good Luck!

Ted, Yamaha 23p (pro series) is that the one you are talking about? (I’m confused I though there was a 25m and a 25p model, the “p” being the pro series, the “m” being a “regular” prop… Never looked into it that much, yet, I think I’m going to try a tempest first.

The prop is the first thing I’d do myself.

All the yamaha guys I chat with say run them 6K all day long

Are you running a jack plate? Best of both worlds there… should be able to get a better hole shot and maybe some more top speed, may want to reprop afterwards.

Does anyone know where I can get the prop re-worked? I do have a 6″ jack plate. Does anyone else run one of those cobra stabilizers? Have you noticed a difference? Also any good sites to check out props? Thanks again for all the info!

The guys on BBC really seem to like this Mark guy, he can also do things like repitch it and add cup, I think if you can get in contact with him, I’m sure he can give you a good idea of what you should have done. No experince personally, but people seem to be very happy with his work, check out the threads on the prop forum. I guess I plan on using him myself if I need some prop work done.

    Here’s the prop forum, http://bbcboards.zeroforum.com/zeroforum?id=14

Here’s the ordering info link http://www.bassboatcentral.com/marksprops1.htm

There is also a setup forum there, I’ll be they can help you a little too. http://bbcboards.zeroforum.com/zeroforum?id=11

Good luck, hope this helps you out.

23M or 23M1 is the pro series prop, the VMax props (new in mid-2005) are a T series – they should be stamped on the outside on of the hub.

There are other props out there that also work well, but I cannot endorse them

    Good luck with your search!

Mikes Prop Shop will run you about $150.00. tell him the problems you are having and he might be able to cup the blades or something to help you get out of the hole a little better. He’s located on the south side of Madison near Fish Hatchery Road

I have never posted on this site before, but I saw this thread and the comment that *NICK* gave about a prop guy on BBC named Mark. I have actually had work done on my prop by this Mark. His name is Mark Croxton and his business is Mark’s Performance Props (He is located south of Indianapolis). I have nothing but praise for him, his top quality work and his high quality service. EVERYTHING WAS OUTSTANDING!!

Last Sept. 06 I sent my 25P tempest plus to Mark to have it repaired (had a few dings in the leading edges)and I wanted the prop balanced and blue printed as well. I also told him I wanted a little more bow lift, etc. He is extremely knowlegable and really knows his stuff! He did everything perfectly and said if it wasn’t quite right to just let him know and then we could tweak it some more if need be. It came back better than it was when it was brand new, it was all polished up to boot and worked fantastic the first time out! Smooth as silk running too! I HIGHLY recommend him to anyone needing prop work or looking to improve their performance (if its possible, Mark will do it).

He did everything on a trust basis as well. You simply send it to him, he does the work and he sends it back with an invoice when it is returned. Then you send him your payment.

It cost me about $175.00 for all the prop work and about $15.00 shipping each way. Turn around time was a week at most. Actually it was even less than a week for me. I shipped it to him on a Wednesday and I think I had it back in my hands on the following Tuesday. He almost always has it in his shop for only 24hrs before it is on its way back to you.

Anyway, I just wanted to pass this on for general information.

Hey welcome aboard , this is truly one of the very best fishing sites I’ve ever been on, I believe I can tell pretty quick now if a site or the people on it are just pushing a product/service because of that product’s or service involvement with the site, the couple sites I visit all seem to be very genuine with the reccomendations.

Yeah well I post lots of stuff on lots of different info, sadly I have more time online than I get to fish, atleast at this point in my life, plus the weather was pretty rough the last couple days I had off, which was in may…. (I chose to work on my days off ) I figure work hard now, play harder later, though the idea does suck sometimes

Search my name and just about anything on here, I’ve probably added my .02 worth Though I have always tried to stay out of political threads…
