Minnkota Universal Transducer / Humminbird Unit

I have a Minnkota trolling motor with built-in universal transducer. The boat came from the dealer with the universal transducer wired to a Humminbird mount. I purchased a Humminbird 525 unit so that I would not need to move the Humminbird console unit to the front of the boat.

Problem: The bow unit acts “[censored]”…In 10 FOW it might flash 10′, then 5′, then 2′, then 20′, then 16’…you get the picture.

I’ve cleaned the transducer on the trolling motor, reset the default settings on the unit…nothing seems to work.

    Any ideas?

    Ideas….

Do you have the proper US connector…this is the conector that joins the trolling motor and the locator. I know it came from the boat dealer, but they can make mistakes too. Check your connector model number against the list on the MinnKota website to make sure it’s the correct one for your locator.

Do you see this problem with the console unit turned off? If the problem disappears, then your bow unit is getting interference from the transom transducer. Typically this interference will only happen in deeper water than 10′, but maybe if your transom transducer is aimed a little too far forward, the interference could occur in shallower water.

Are you leaving the console unit on when using the
    bow 525?
You may be getting interference from the other 20 degree
transducer if your using both simultaneously.

Jason and Dan, I suspect you guys are correct about the interference…won’t know for sure until I get on the water again and try turning off the console unit with the bow unit on.

If the bow-unit IS getting interference from the transom transducer, is there an easy way to mitigate the problem without turning off the console unit?

Or are you getting interference from your trolling motor????? Are the depth’s jumping when the trolling motor is running or sitting still? I have noticed on those universal sonar trolling motors that sometimes the motor will interfere with the sonar. Or at least not display as crisp of a reading.

    Just a heads up!

If your console humminbird has the dual beam feature you can set it to the 60 degree coverage and that should do it. Also as stated make sure the locator is not hooked up to the trolling motor battery.

Does not matter if the motor is running or not. The common thread, though, is that the console unit is alway on too.

Hi guys…Turning off the console unit did not solve the problem.

Turning the sensitivity way down DID solve the problem.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys!!!
