Lead in the Lakes

Noticed in today’s Minneapolis paper that Gander Mountain and other retailers are sponsoring a swap of lead tackle for non-lead based tackle. Has anyone had any experience with the new material? Is the performance any different than lead products?

My partner uses the non-lead products for his lindy style fishing. It’s a bullet sinker, but the ones he uses aren’t made too well, they have a tendency wear out his line and cause a lot of break offs. The size is very small comparably though.

I have to stop at Gander anyway tonight, so I’ll check out the swap and post more details tomorrow.

I saw this advertised. It makes me wonder why the state is helping to pay for this???
How many loons can possibly injest jigs and die? I’m a little skeptical.

I would agree. The loon population is as strong as ever as is that of most all birds of the north. On Winnie the eagles are as healthy as ever. One has to wonder where the legislators get their info – they obviously don’t spend anytime un the north country.

I use steel weights in my bottom bouncers and they work the same as lead. The only downfall is they rust if you put them away wet. Of course with bouncers the size of the weight is not an issue. I would be skeptical using steel in jigs or other weights.
