Lower Unit Lube

Quick question, this is my first time around putting grease in my lower unit. I took both plugs out and filled from the bottom, when it came out the top I hurried up and put the plug in the bottem (losing some oil in that time). What is the best way to do refill the lower unit, any tricks or tips from some of you more experienced guys?

    Thanks

Get a lower unit lube kit, it is just a tube with a pump on it. When it starts coming out the top, stop and put in the Top plug first, this causes a vacuum, so when you remove the tub and install the bottom plug you do not loose as much oil.

For example, a large lower unit will hold 22oz. Generally, you don’t want a full 22oz in there. “Most” maintenance manuals recommend draining an oz or two (shot glass full). So, having a little drip out is just fine!

The pump is the way to go!

Put the top plug in first while holding the tip in the bottom. It will save on some running out.

Your technique is the best. The little you lose out the
bottom is the perfect amount to lose to allow for expansion, especially in the winter time.

I’ll echo about the pumps. The run about $10. and are well worth it.
