Outboard Extended Warranty?

I’m in the process of purchasing a new rig & am considering purchasing an extended warranty on the outboard. Looking for any thoughts or experiences, good or bad on the subject of extended warranties. I know they are expensive up front but on todays more sophisticated motors the cost may be minimal for the extended warranty versus repairs 4 years down the road. Thanks for your thoughts. Lunker

I am of the feeling that “extended warranty” is an anchent Arabic saying for “more profit to the seller”. Warranties are set up so that money is made by the warranty guarantor. First I would ask, how long is the manufacturers warranty good for? Is there a deductable with the extended warranty? If so add that to the cost of the warranty. Then subtract that from the length of the extended warranty and that is what you could be paying for. Example: If Manuf. warranty is for 2 years and the extended warranty is for 4, does that mean you have a 6 year warranty or just 2 past the Manufacturers warranty. You may be paying for just 2 extra years.
My Wife bought a TV with warranty and bought the extended warranty to boot. Turns out she only bought 1 extra year, guess what died just after the “extended” warranty was up?

I agree….. You should be able to get most things covered under your boat insurance. Lower Unit extra…

Also, you do not have to pay the price they give you. Just like a vehicle ext warranty you can wheel and deal and most times get it for almost nothing
