My new rod storage system

Finally got around to making this. So far, I like it. The goal was to as cheaply and conveniently as possibly make a rod rack that could hold a bunch of rods and be safely stored away. Safely for the rods, safely for me and my family.

The rods lay nice and flat. They go in and out pretty easily, although doubling up two spinning rods is a challenge. It holds 36 rod/reel combos and probably a couple hundred rods without reels! (not there quite yet)

It’s made out of 1/2″ PVC. About the cheapest PVC you can buy.

I orginally was going to place this right over my garage door but visions of hanging lures catching on the door and snapping my rods made me set it back a bit. It’s now sitting just over my rod locker on my boat in good position to move the rods to and from the boat.

I would probably change quite a few things if I ever did it again, to make it simpler and cheaper but I think it was a good first try.

Anybody else doing something like this? I was able to do it for around $50. I figure I could knock about $15 to $20 off of it with some design changes.

How about some tubes to slide the rods into? or even the little rods sleeves, looks good, not that it’s an issue if you are atleast a little attention to it, you shouldn’t break off an eyelet but, that would make it perfect IM(humble)O.

Great idea, I don’t have anywhere near that many rods, yet

By George I think it will work. Good idea and especially the hanging version.

That was in one of my first designs. It’s a good idea in that the rod is fully protected, keeps the line/lures from tangling, and it would be easy to do, just make box to put the tubes in and stack them.

The cost kept me from doing it. 1/2″ PVC is $1.09 for a 10 ft section. As you get bigger, the cost goes up considerably, 3″ is around $10 and 4″ is $15. I think for a guy that has less rods it would make more sense but that would have added a lot of cost for me. Multiply the extra cost by 36 and it’s quite a bit. Aside from cost the only other disadvantage I see there is that the rods won’t lay flat. Probably flat enough though. I couldn’t figure out a good way to support the reel end either. You want to be able to easily take rods and reels out.

Too bad you just can’t winch it down into your boat when your ready to go.

    Looks good.

I used 4” thin wall PVC sewer pipe for my storage tube. It’s about 1/2 the price of normal PVC pipe (about $8 for a 10 ft stick). Just an FYI.

I made a similar hanging rack out of wood. I had to add another level this past year after two years of working at a sporting goods store. The PVC is a better idea, but probably more costly. For me the tube idea would not work because I leave bottom bouncers and other things rigged up that would not fit. This winter I picked up some new trolling rods and some of my Grandpa’s antiques, so a new rod rack may be in order.

Very cool idea. I never thought to hang a rack from the garage ceiling. That would help me keep my rods safe out of the reach of my little ones. I see a project for the next rainy Saturday!

Very interesting. Make sure you don’t get it caught in the automatic garage door opener

    Seriously… nice set up

I bought two 1X4’s and screwed that to the ceiling in my garage, then some bike hangers and eye screws to screw into them. Have the rods alternating on each one. Works great.

Dude… I am so making one of those…

My PVC project right now is a full-length awning. PVC frame, blue tarp cover.
