I’m thinking about spooling a little heavier line on for an upcoming trip down the Flambeau River. It’s primarily for smallies, but it is a river and you never know what’s going to tug on your line. In the past we’ve had pike, cats, muskie, and huge carp. I’ve been using 6 and 8 lb test but getting bit off when a larger species hit. I don’t want to use a leader because I am primarily going to be fishing plastics. Primary rods will be and Avid 6’9″ spinner and a Shimano Clarus 7’er. Both are Med. light fast tip rods. I don’t care for the braids such as Spiderwire. So tough to break when you get hung up and we will be canoeing. Looking for a limp 10 lb mono line. Any suggestions? I like the Sensation and Ironsilk but have never tried the heavier stuff.

I’ve been using the 17lb Ironsilk on my baitcasters this year, and I really like it. I don’t have it on any of my spinning reels though, and I don’t know how that would work. I fished the ironsilk on the river this weekend, and I did like the way that it held when I got caught up. I’ve been bery impressed with how it handles, and casts with very little memory. Kind of like my two years at SCSU: Very little memory.
    Good luck,
    Steve

What reels are you using SteveO? I’m considering the tightness of the coils in light of memory issues. What I’m thinking is maybe beefing up the the reel a bit so you have a larger spool diameter, thus reducing the tightness of the coil. Do you still have that Sedona 4000? If you’re not in favor of going that big, maybe you’d consider borrowing one of mine. I have a Tica Libra 3000 (very similar to your guide series reel) or a pair of Daiwa Regal X’s – 2500c’s that have a larger diameter spool on them. They have spare spools and I could wind up one with a Trilene XL and the other with either the Iron Silk or Sensation. It’ll give you some selection and versatility in your applications.

Just give me a hollar! You know, we could team up on the Mal for just an hour or so and dial in something workable! LMK!!!

I’ve got a couple of Quantum Kinetic pTi’s. 2500 size. I may spool some up amd try it. I’ve got a care package from Yo-Zuri that has some X-tough mono hybrid line. I gotta remember that there is no stretch in that line. My last outing on Bass Lake had me losing 4 REALLY nice LM. Set the hook so hard that I ripped the tube and jig right out of their mouth.
Open seat in my boat anytime for you Kid.

hi SteveO, for just 10lb mono, I’ve liked the XL. if toothy critters is your concern, they have no trouble with just about any mono in biting them off, even ten. i’d still recommend home made short light wire leaders. I make mine from very small diameter single strand and works very good, and I feel it doesn’t spook other species due to the small diameter. works good when teeth are getting in the way. Jack.

Steveo, give P-line a try. Its a smaller diameter line thats tougher than most mono’s.

P-Line Flouroclear would be my recomendation. And check the diameter measurements on the box. 12 pound Flouroclear may be as thin as 10 pound Stren/Trilene.

For the last couple years I have used fireline. For castability and just plain toughness there is no comparison. Only my opinion.
