I had mixed answers when I posted this in a question before, but my LCX-104c has NMEA 0183 and my X-17 has the NMEA 2000. A couple guys said they cannot share data like waypoints and others said they can. The X-17 has data wires that connect to both the NMEA 0138 and a pair for hooking to NMEA 2000, so shouldn’t they be able to share? If not, what those wires for? I should say that my waypoints are on the 17 and need to transmit to the 104 (recieve). Thanks. Mike

NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000

Both your 104c and X17 units run together on the NMEA 2000 network. The 0183 wires are used to connect to external devices. (In other words, there is no such think as a 0183 network) For instance, connecting your unit to a computer to backup, save, upload and exchange saved GPS data.
I suggest you google up >>> 0183 connection <<< Ton of info out there on using the 0183 connections. Most of us “Keep it Simple” fishermen just clip those connections and never use them.
Edit. You should be able to share data between the units over the NMEA 2000 network.

The 104C is pre-NMEA 2000. It is NMEA 0183 only. So, his only option to share a GPS module is to hardwire the units via the NMEA 0183 port.
We do have several guys here who have done this. Stenger is one. Do you guys who have any issues sharing waypoints that way?

April 5, 2007 at 7:18 pm #557579Wade I have eyt to have a lot of “Saddle” with this yet. I do know that both units are receiving sattelites off the one GPS puck. I have not seen if they share way point info yet.
April 8, 2007 at 3:03 pm #558510You can only share waypoints with the NMEA 2000 network on a Lowrance.
April 8, 2007 at 3:22 pm #558512You might think of these two systems this way. NMEA 0183 is like a dialup modem where NMEA 2000 is like a router.
