It won’t be long and alot of fishermen will be on the water using their favorite blade bait rods for jigging, and even casting, a lure called a bladebait. What is your favorite rod for this technique?
    Thanks, Bill

My favorite rods for fishing this lure is a St. Croix Avid 6.6” Avid med fast tip and a 6′ St. Croix Custom made Avid med fast tip rod from Hooked On Fishing. These rods are very sensitive and have the backbone to set the hook and lift that big eye upward when the fish smacks the lure or the weight of the fish is felt. Sensitive, strong and well made rods for sure.
    Thanks, Bill

I go with the St.Croix Avid or Legend Elite 6’3″ med. Xfast. I like these rods for blades, jiggin or pitchen. The St.Croixs are a tough rod to beat.

What are bladebaits you say? These are baits/lures for jigging and/or casting that have alot of fantastic vibration on the ”lift upward” when jigging and on the ”retrieve” when casting. In SE MN they are available at Hooked On Fishing in Rochester. If you are in the Red Wing area they are available at Everts Fishing Resort. If you need to purchase them by internet/mail they are available at B-Fish-N Tackle. Below is a link that shows you what bladebaits are. I have fished them for many years and they do work well.

    Thanks, Bill

Bill…for some reason people say I have developed quite a knack for doing this…It does have a technique that will really up your catch rate.

I have tried a gamut of rods and prefer a (shorter) 5’5″ to 6′ med wt casting rod with a very fast action albeit sensitive tip.

I run 10# Superbraid with an important 4 ft Seaguar Floro leader and #2 casting snap. The leader help keep the line from bellying in the current and the soft tip gives me a little “shock absorber”. Too hard of a hookset with the braid can tear hooks out.

Although the in pic above I was successful with a TWS 6’8″ rod. Spin rods with mono generally do not shine for me in this vertical presentation…especially in the deeper water for big Sauger.

Pitching small Blades is another story…Dean is a great devotee of this game!

Hey Tommy, how are you doing? Bladebaits have caught ALOT of fish. I have a couple plano boxes just for them. Great lures and they come in many colors. Lots of fun to fish.
    Thanks, Bill

I like the 7′ Fenwick HMG med. action, it’s been a great rod for me. Caught a lot of fish on it.
