Trolling motor problems

I have been having major problems with the connection to the power on my minnkota trolling motor. When I plug it in and turn it, it will light up showing a connection. As soon as I take my hand off the plug – nothing. I have already replaced the receptacle and checked all the connections on the plug itself. The battery is fully charged. Has anyone else had this issue before? I am about to throw the thing in the lake as it has failed me on several trips now after working fine in the garage.

Boy, you’ve got me on that one Todd.
If the plug and receptacle have both been replaced and everything is hooked up fine with all the batteries charged, there must be something we are missing. If you plug your motor in to someone else’s boat does it work then? At least then you might know if it’s the motor or the boat. I’ve had 3 Minn Kotas and have never had that problem.
    Anyone else have any ideas??

    Todd,

Could it be that the prongs on the plug are bent or corroded? Corrosion is probably the most likely culprit so I’d try brushing the plug with a wire brush and then spraying the plug and recepticle with WD-40. If that doesn’t do it, try tweaking the prongs on the plug so that make firmer contact with the recepticle.

    Good luck.

Same deal here. I ended up wiring it direct to the wire connecting to the back of the plug. I think the connection even with the plug is not sufficient.
