PowerPro question

I was doing a little rod and reel maintenance this afternoon and was going to change the line on some of my rigs that have PowerPro on them but need some advice first. Other than a bit of fading (originally green in color), the line appears to be in very good shape. Most of it has only been through 1-2 seasons and I don’t see any frays or knots in it. I actually like how well it casts after a bit of use as the line loses some of its original waxiness. FYI–This is the 8/30 test line.

When should you change PowerPro line?

    Thanks,

    Curt

P.S. Following is what it says on PowerPro.com, but just wanted some IDA advice as well.

When is it time to replace PowerPro?

Look at your line and you will know.

If the line starts to look frayed or worn, this is your indication that it’s time to retie. If you are fishing around rocks and structure, you will need to retie more often than if you are trolling in clear water.

When you reel no longer has enough line capacity, it’s time to take off the rest of the old line and tie on a fresh section of PowerPro.

“If it isnt broke, dont fix it.”

If its still retaining its strength and your not having isses with it, keep using it.

I agree with Dave. This stuff is really tough and besides trimming off the stuff that is in tougher shape towards the end I leave it alone. On top of that it isn’t the cheapest stuff in the world either

it sounds like you still have a lot of life in the line, but before you think about replacing it, spool it on to another reel so you will be using the portion of the line that hasn’t seen water. I don’t have much experience with power pro, but with fireline, it seems to get better after it gets a bit worn and starts to turn a little fuzzy (no kidding)

Spray KVD Line and Lure Conditioner on the spool. It will help prolong the life of your line. Helps it not to dry out as fast.

Re-spool it backwards on to your real.

I do this with all my braids and superlines after a couple years. I usually do 2 years, transfer the line to a different reel and get another 2 years out of it. Could probably get more years but better safe than sorry.

I use the 80 lb stuff… IMO there really isn’t a reason to reverse the line on another spool…unless you like the new brite color look.

Really, just cutting off the last few feet will do the trick. Losing it’s color does nothing to it’s strength. But I do have to admit, it makes me feel better.

Tim, how long have you been using this? I just got a bottle from Everts this fall. I have 4 reels with it applied to the line and one without…now if I can just remember which is which!
