Greetings, I’m new here and new to Walleye fishing. I’m trying to figure out how to power the boat I’m dreaming about. I do like mercury but am having a hard time deceiding between the 75 hp. Opitmax or the four stroke tillers. Would appriecate your ideas.

    Thanks much,

You will really like the tiller handle and the adjustable RPM feature on the Yamaha four strokes.

For a tiller walleye rig, I would recommend a four stroke.

To be honest, I don’t think there are any bad 4-strokes on the market.

So with that said you have the option of:
    1) Yamaha
    2) Merc
    3) Evinrude E-tec (not a 4-stroke but performs with similar capabilities for trolling and noise)
    4) Suzuki
    5) Honda

With that said, shop for the best reputable dealer in your area that will service your engine.

Derek, Tell us about that tiller handle, I don’t know anyone who has it yet. Pro’s, con’s, price.

Mark, I have a 75 HP and 6 HP Yamaha four stroke tillers on my 17′ Lund. I have been pleased with them.

The new tiller handle came out last year and is standard on all Yamaha tiller motors. The RPM’s can be digitally adjusted with a touch of a button(#4 in the diagram). I can troll my 60 HP down to 1.3-1.5 MPH. The 75HP can be trolled down even slower. The gear shift lever has also be redesigned and is very comfortable to use. Yamaha also is offering the 3+3 warranty again this year.

I didn’t know it was standard, but I saw it on the tillers at the boat show today. Nice handle!

Derek, out of curiousity, why or how would the 75 HP troll down lower than a 60 HP? I’m not following how that could be.

I can’t remember what the reason was. When I picked up my boat last year, the tech at Lacannes marine told me the 75 trolled down slower than the 60 using the RPM control.

Maybe if it was offered………This one was the only one I could get. Clarence loves the E-TEC! Tuckner Ran an E-TEC and had nothing bad to say.

In the Yamaha motors the F60 is a smaller gearcase than the F75. The F75 is the same size as a F115. Therefor if you have the same RPM,s the F60 should be slower because of the smaller prop in diameter. Both motors would be great. The ETEC has been great. Lighter than 4 strokes and new technology than the Opti. All 3 companies are offering extended warranty programs thru March 31. Give us a call or PM if you have any other questions.

I watched a program recently on the E-Tec. Right out of the box you can run it as if it were already broke in.

That troll down feature on the yamaha handle sure sounds interesting. Going to have to check that out at the show this year.

Thought it was real interesting this last week while in zihuatanjo Mexico that I would say 99% of the fishing fleet ran Yamahas for out boards. The only other motor present was suzuki. Most common sizes where from 60s to 90s. Yamaha enduros where by far the most popular. This s a 2 stroke that I guess is not sold in the US. The last few yeas a lot of boats are getting re powered with Yamaha 4 strokes. For reliability and gas millage I can see why. The guides I talked with seem to value a reliable motor a lot more than one with just a good warranty. Guess that warranty does not count for much while set adrift in the ocean.

Folks – just want to note here that YAMAHA’s multi-function handle is available ONLY on their EFI engines.

It’s a great handle and well ahead of the competition… again!

I remember the tech telling me that you can get the RPM’s down lower on the 75 v.s the 60. Thats why the 75 trolls slower.

I just saw this post so late in jumping in.

All the info is right on so far here so that’s good. But just so you know…the 4 strokes (all brands), troll faster than the 2 stroke engines. Although they troll/idle quieter, maybe a little smoother, they DO troll faster. A 4 stroke can NOT idle as slowly as a 2 stoke. 100-300 rpm’s is huge when talking “trolling speed”. The 4 strokes will be about 200-300 rpm’s faster at idle.

I run Mercs and that’s why I run a an Opti tiller vs. the 4 stroke.

Yamaha’s Variable Trolling Speed, available on F50 to F90 models, gives you amazing trolling control. Fine tune your most effective engine trolling speed in 50-rpm increments (between 620-900 rpm’s on the F50 and F60, and 550-1000 rpm’s on the F75 and F90), and lock it in with the touch of a button. A Yamaha exclusive.
