I’ve noticed water coming up into my baitwell the last couple of trips out. I have the plug out and haven’t turned on any switches. Also, how do yu know if the bilge pump is working? I turn mine on and nothing happens. I hear it running. Where is the water supposed to pump out? I pull the plug and tip the boat after every trip and there doesn’t seem to be a ton of water in there.

Baitwells on Fishawks

Fishhawks are pretty dry most of the time. And the baitwell water tends to come up a little if you’re running the livewell. Maybe it’s ballast?
No worries. A normal occurrence.
The bilge pump sends water out the side toward the stern. You have an actual hole there. A good way to test it… leave the plug out some day. Turn the pump on. Then watch the boat sink just a little bit slower than normal as the bilge frantically pumps water out that hole in the stern.
No, I haven’t actually done this. Just waiting to see if we get a response.

June 5, 2003 at 1:53 pm #267922I found out (after it burned out) that the livewell in my boat should only be left on at rest/trolling or no-wake speeds. On plane, the intake is out of the water. The pump is water cooled and in my case, now it is burned out!
June 6, 2003 at 1:37 pm #267997A friend of mine just had an occurance with his new boat that was kind of odd. It had rained a bunch one night and there was alot of water in the boat. You could hear the bilge pump run, but nothing was coming out. Come to find out there was a carpet scrap from when they built the boat that was plugging the bilge. Once we found that, it worked just fine.
Also, your bilge pump is not necessarily mounted in the lowest spot in your boat. It may not run even though there might be a little water in there. As long as water doesn’t come pouring out for several minutes when you pull your plug, you are probably O.K.Good Luck!
Crossin’June 6, 2003 at 2:20 pm #267998there has never seemed to be ton of water in there. It just concerned me when i saw water coming up in the baitwell. How much trouble was it to get at the bilge pump? I’d like to check it for obstructions.
June 6, 2003 at 8:11 pm #268029It was kind of a pain in the butt! It was on an Alumacraft. You had to remove a round access panel and reach down while someone shined a light and guided your hand to the pump.
June 8, 2003 at 6:08 pm #268090Steve, your bait and livewells are on the same water line. So you must regulate this by screwing in/out the white nozzle located in the upper corner of either well. Also water tends to “bleed” into the baitwell when filling the livewell if the upright overflow stopper isn’t screwed in tight.
Your bilge is noiseless and empties from the white nylon orifice near your gas tank cap on the side of your boat. I seldom get water in my FishHawk except when in heavy waves. There are black inspection plates that you can screw off to check on the bilge and livewell pumps.
Hope that helps!June 8, 2003 at 11:34 pm #268103This might sound stupid but you could test you bilge pump at home when the boat is on the trailer using a garden hose. Just run water in the main deck for about 5 or 10 minutes and then turn on the bilge pump. Of course you also need to put in the plug at the back. Then you should see water being pumped out of the boat.
