Terrible let down

I post this as a man defeated…I declared Monday an important holiday that so deemed me having the day off from work, oh yes presidents day the most important holiday we’ve had all year …no coincidence it happens to fall on the first day of less than torturous weather we’ve had for a few weeks now So, I’ve made arrangements for a good friend to also honor this brilliant holiday and demand that he to be provided the day off work to honor the holiday with me…….from pool 4. Now let me say I haven’t been out since December and I am feeling the cabin fever BAD!! Real BAD!!! For the last week I’ve had my chin up knowing that come Monday I shall be on the water, this will make everything better, come Monday….I’ve spent this week conditioning my jigging arm (you don’t want to know) plotting my course…come Monday. Fast forward to today (Saturday) I’m up early getting my chores done so I’ll be able to begin the preparations, I get my list done as planned and pull the cover off the boat, put away all of the tackle I’ve been stocking up on for the last few months, relign all my rods, tie on new jigs, grease the trailer bearings…then it happens…out of the corner of my eye I see it…somethings not right…upon investigation I discover that the lower unit has frozen up expanded and busted the case. I’ve never had such a sobering sinking feeling hit me like that moment. I frantically have spent the rest of my day searching for a new lower unit but have just come to the reality that it is not to be, not before my beloved holiday. Now I sit preparing to call said friend and inform him the experience that I’ve been urging him to live for 2 years and that which we’ve finally cleared with his wife as an event worthy of such a day off from his professional and parental responsibilities is not to be….a man defeated…

Gotta change the Lower unit oil before winter, that sucks, I know I got lucky a couple years when I didn’t know better myself.

Good news is Evert’s rents boats

Don’t let it ruin your trip that you’ve had planned for so long. Rent ,borrow or steal a boat, there is still time and options

Dont let that stop you from coming fishing. Deano will be glad to rent you a boat here at the resort and the fishing is starting to get better. I will have a full report up hopefully by tuesday. Dont be afraid to call dean and ask him about using a boat.

    Capt’n,
Sorry to hear of your tough lesson on lower units. and good luck with the repair or replacement.

As Nick said, to prevent that ever happening again, change your lower unit oil EVERY Fall, I do mine in October, any water then is removed.

Also a good idea to do twice a year, is to removed your prop and look to see if any line is wound around your prop shaft. which is probably the culprit of how water got in in the first place. mono will slowly eat away the seal..
hope you get on the water soon.

Good call Jack. I did change the gear oil this fall as with every year, but it obviously took on water last time out. After reading your post I pulled the prop and you were dead right, the seal’s been torn up by a wad of mono. I’d be all about renting one of Dean’s fine vessels but I think I’m going to go ahead and work tomorrow and try to get the replacement unit and take my holiday day off later this week. There’s just something about the way you rig your own boat that you can’t do without. Anybody got any advise as to where a can pick up a lower unit for a reasonable fee…fast?

Thanks Guys-I want a report from Monday (not too good I hope)

    Jack,
What do you mean you can get line on your prop hub?
