Spinning reel for vertical jigging rod

I’ve heard from various people about the size reel people use when vertical jigging, they say find the smallest reel, it will reduce fatigue when jigging all day. I’m unclear on how small people are talking, ultralight small or one up from that. With size 10 being ultralight, I would think a size 20 or 25 reel would be ideal.

Do some of you use really small spinning reel on your jiggin rods?

Also, what recommendations could you give? I like the Pflueger President(found some on clearance) and the Trion’s.

    Thanks. Craig

The pflueger president in size 25 should be a great reel for what you are going to use it for. I would not go with a size 20 as it would be rather small. If you have any questions on these reels feel free to contact me, I do some pro-staff work for Pflueger and would be happy to help with any questions.

Jason is right on! Most of the Guides and Professionals I have fished with…on and off this forum use reels that are specific for the technique used.
Vertical jigging for Walleye and Sauger does not require more than a small reel. Whether you are using 6-8# Mono or braid, no more than 100yds is really needed on the spool.
A common size used is one level up from UL….a 1000 Shimano for instance… or a 100 Fin Nor that hold about 140 yds of 6#. I have seen several guys do just fine with UL reels also… when matched with Light or ML rods.
Even a HUGE walleye will seldom go more than 20-30yds on a run. I have managed to boat two Sturgeon over 70# with such a set up while being anchored!… A 6’6″ St. Croix Elite MLF rod with a 1500 Avid series reel and 6# Sensation mono.

If I am drifting or pulling harnesses on Millelacs or Green Bay then its a different set up… 7- 7 1/2′ ML foot rod and 2500 series reel.

    What Jason said.

I have 2 jig rods with Symetres and 2 with Sedonas (I was short of cash when I bought those). Plenty of line and light enough to fish all day. One size up from ultralight.

Thanks all, I’ll take a look at the symetres when I’m at the store. I want to compare the symetre to the Pflueger president, see if I can notice a difference. Size wise sounds like one size up from UL. I’m thinking of spooling up this reel up with Fireline, 6# or 8#, so I should be able to get plenty of line on it.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

If you do spool it up with fireline I would recomend a 48″-36″ leader of flouro and the end. I started doing this last year and noticed I got more srikes than the reel that had only fireline on it. If you do this make sure you use a double uni-knot to attach the leader to the main line. Just an idea for ya.

The 1000 series from Shimano is a great all around size.
