Has anyone tried one of those rod holders that clamp to the hand rails. Naturally the big advantage is that you’d put fewer holes in your boat. I guess I was wondering if they can be clamped down well enough that it holds the rod in place. The thing that would concern me is the torque that rod could create and the one thing you wouldn’t want is for the rod to be pulled down into the water.

I did try the kind that clamps onto the gunwale. They sell at Cabela’s or BPS for under $5 each. Not even worth that much. If the gunwale has more than a 1/4″ lip on either side, the holder won’t clamp effectively onto the side.

I give them 2 thumbs down.

Check out my article on boat rigging, I have some information on rail mounts. The best way to go is with Ram-Mounts.

i use a gunwale mount down east. this is a very strong rod holder, and easy to use. just make sure that the rail is strong enough to handle it. i troll for musky and they can be very violent when they hit, or when you stick a crankbait into a rockpile at 5mph. this rod holder has stood up to the test for me, check them out and see if they are what you are looking for.
