OK, here is what I’m attempting to do. I’ve got a rod locker on the side of the boat, but it has no structure, basically just a box to throw rods in. I’m trying to make a device that will hold some sort of a tube, which I can then store rods in, indivdually.

The part I’m having a hard time locating is the tubes. I can get golf club tubes, but they are too short. I’ve considered trying to “splice two together to get the desired length, however this would create a weak spot that could fail over time with the pounding of normal boat use/trailering. Any suggestions for light, cheap plastic tubes that have some rigidness to them??? I had considered pvc, but wondered if there are alternate solutions available.

    Thanks!!

YOU CAN TRY A.B.S, IT IS BLACK AND IT IS CHEAPER THAN PVC IT IS LIGHTER .1.5″ IS THE SMALLEST I THINK?I USE IT FOR MY ICE FISHIN RODS IN THE CAR AND IN THE TRAP DOES A FINE JOB FOR ME.LOOK FOR IT WHERE PVC IS OR GO TO A PLUMB. SHOP THAT USE ABS.

Another option might be the plastic tube used for installing central vacuum systems into homes. The stuff I used was very thinwalled but tough and somewhat flexible, and very light. I dealt with the BEAM dealer in Minneapolis to get this stuff but I’d believe almost all central vac dealers would carry it.

Thanks Guys!! I’m working on drawing, but I don’t have a good 3-D type drawing tool. Once I get the drawing complete, I’ll post a pic. I love tinkering with this stuff.

I am curious as to what you are attempting to solve. I, too, have a long “box” for rods. I was looking into organizers, also. All this to keep the rods from tangling and also keeping them a bit more protected. I saw some cloth rod sleeves at Joe’s and picked some up. They worked great. My wife then proceed to make a half-dozen more for my b-day. I also found that the people who make the Drift Control sock also make a product called Rod Control – a rod sleeve. I can put more rods in the locker without the problem of having them get messed-up. The organizers limit the number of rods considerably, and we all know that more is better.

Nate has been using those rod sleeves from Drift Control and really likes them. Am going to have to get myself some. My big rod locker in my boat has built in tubes to keep the rods from getting all tangled. They aren’t very long though, but that helps to make it easy to take the rod out. Sure work nice. Thanks, Bill

Good post, I am looking into it myself. Do those coverlay ones work well? I looked when I was at cabelas and didn’t see anything, but I think this is what I need. Thanks.

Ernie, you make a great point with the rod “socks”. I hadn’t thought about those. I”m betting my Grandma would love to make some up for me. I’ll have to give it a try, plus it won’t cost much if I don’t like the results.

Another option, one that I chose for my 1700 Fisherman, was to get them from my Lund dealer. I got the set for a 1800 ProV which includes the tubes and the backrests.

Here’s what I did after breaking 1 of my rod tips in my 1660 ProV. The rod lockers aren’t very long or wide for that matter so I went to Menards and picked up a 10′ pc. of white PVC I think it’s 1.5″ dia. and cut it to 5-24″ lengths in my miterbox. It’s only a couple $$ easy to work with and if you don’t like it your only out a couple bucks. I taped 3 together like a triple barrel shotgun then taped the other to together so I have 3 up with 2 up along side of it. Maybe this will come out right:
    00
    00
    0
Then use the rod hangers that came stock and hang 3 rods and prop the other 2 in between and GENTLY shut the rod locker. I see I need quick folding reel handles now to make more room! I just use it for the tip sections which get tangled the most. If you want to get fancy you could put caps on the end so your lure wouldn’t ever fall out the end and get hooked. I haven’t broken a tip since. I just slid it to the front of the locker so you can’t see it unless your in the command seat. I can take a pic if you want.

Ferny, is yours a tiller 1660? I have the tiller model and I had my dealer build a rod locker from the front platform, going under the electronics locker, to the rear livewell. Very convinient.
