I need to replace the tires on my 2002 Tahoe Z71 – (P265/70R-17). Where should I look for a good price and a good service plan, ie. free lifetime rotations, free flat repair, etc.?

Recommendations on brands? The current tires are Bridgestone Dueler AT’s. Should I stick with these. Any opinions on Goodyear or Michelen.

    Thanks for the input.

    SnR,

Get a price from Discount and see if the dealer will
    match.
Worked for me and I got the lifetime rotations.
    BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A’s are a great tire.

    Go get em!

I think it was Blue Fleck that had recommended this site http://www.tirerack.com/index.jsp

It’s a good source of info and reviews to decide which tires perform the best for your vehicle.

Duelers are a good tire, REVO’s are much better and really stick to the road and perform great off road. They are the best tire I have ever had by far. They really improve braking on slippery surfaces compared to other good tires. They arent cheap.

Bf goodrich also sit high on the rating scale with me. I stay away from any good year tire for trucks, I have not had good luck with them at all on trucks.

I have only run michelin on cars, and they had really good tread life, but I do recall getting stuck in the driveway many times when I shouldnt have. Probably just the style I had?

Check out tire rack for prices, they really do seem to be the best even after shipping, Last time I got some tires, discount tire actually price matched the tires plus what I would’ve paid in shipping, and I avoided a lot of hassle, and got the best price.

The Goodrich T/A’s are a good tire but a good friend of mine, who’s family has been in the tire business for decades, swears that Toyo makes the best truck tire by far. He purchased a new Chevy crew cab a couple years ago. It came with the T/A’s on it from the factory. He took them off immediately and put new Toyo tires on it. He then sold the T/A’s. Being in the tire business as long as he has I trust in his expertice. They sell tires from probably a dozen different manufacturers.

I go to Discount tire but a coworker of mine will get them mailed from TireRack.com and installed by Wal-Mart for usually a little bit less.

I’ve had a set of Michelan’s (AT 265/??) on my 99 Yukon that I bought at Sam’s Club. They were about 180.00 per tire. I think it cost less than 10.00 per tire for the lifetime rotation/balancing and repairs. I’ve got more than 80k miles on them already and the tread is wearing evenly. I’ll easlily make it through the winter on these tires. Sam’s Club was at least 30.00 per tire cheaper than Tires Plus. I had the same Michelan tires on my 93 GMC pickup with the same results (over 75k when I sold it).

I bought the new Goodyear Silent-Armor Wranglers, by far the worst tire I have ever owned, 2 tires bald after less than 20,000 mi. They are 50,000 mi tires but I will not pay a dime to have another goodyear put on my truck. just my experience.

I wouldn’t put another set of Goodyears on either! Our last set was junk after 50g. My dads been in the tire biz for 36+ years, he’s now with goodyear and won’t put a set of them his vehicles. That says something.

I now have the dueller(sp?) AT’s, great traction in the rain or icy roads but terrible in the plowing or mud.

Hey Chappy, that pretty much sums up my Dueler AT’s at the GTG, huh.

Seriously, though. Thanks for your help on this one guys. I bought my truck in Austin, so it might not be beneficial to drive 150 miles to get new tires. Gundez-71 lives down there and is going to have them send me a quote. Hopefully I can have Discount Tires do a price match. From the sounds of it, they have a decent price on the Dueler AT’s.

I bought BF Goodrich tires last year at Tires Plus in Columbia Heights. I checked Sam’s, Discount and Tires Plus. Sam’s was the cheapest and Discount wouldn’t match their price. Tires Plus matched the price and they have free lifetime rotation, valve stems and other freebies (I don’t think flat repair was one). If you call, I think the gal’s name was Beth and I would talk with her. They’ve got a couple of people there that aren’t the most helpful.

Shoot, I would say to get the same tires as you had. 100,000 miles on one set of tires is unreal. Especially with your driving.

I have to think these are original, but the dealer may have replaced them before I bought it. The truck had 54k on it then, and 105k now. The tires have decent tread on them yet, but I’m ready to foot the bill for new ones.

I got some Gillette Kodiak ATs second hand- they were like new when I bought all 4 for $120. 10,000 miles later, they still have 95% tread left, never seen a tire wear that good, nor do I know where they are sold when new, but they are great.

You didn’t say if you do any towing/hauling with your Tahoe, but you may want to consider an “LT” tire, (something with a 6 ply rating or load range “C”) will be a stronger casing/more load carrying capacity and you won’t sacrifice much if any ride comfort.

Lots of good info there guys. I am also looking for new tires right now (at a good price of course).
For what its worth, my Goodyear RTS have 107,000 miles on them and they still look pretty good. I did rotate them about every 10-12K. My brother had 112K on his Goodyear ATS tires when he replaced them with the same. I have heard some bad feedback regarding goodyear but I can honestly say that they have done me very well.

I had a pair of Coopers Discovery AT on a F250. They were a very nice riding tire and quiet. Seemed to have great traction in snow and mud also.

I had a pair of REVOs on that same truck and did not like them at all. I have had the best luck with BF Goodrich AT on any of the vehicals I have owned. Next pair will be those. Stick with what you trust I guess.

EVery vehicle I’ve owned has has a set of replacment coopers. There very good tires.

If your puting them on a truck and don’t need the AT’s. There highway tires will last a VERY long time! (If properly maintained) I can see getting 100k out of them. The longest I’ve gone is 60k before replacing the entire truck.

    Good luck

I need to replace the tires on my 2002 Tahoe Z71

A lesson for all: I was going to replace the tires today at Discount Tire, but a patch of black ice changed my plans yesterday morning. The Tahoe was totalled after breaking through a power pole on SH 97 and knocking out the power to the south side of Forest Lake. Some of you may have heard this on KQ yesterday morning. I’m lucky that I don’t have more injuries than I do (2 stitches on my hand), seeing that driver’s door took the brunt of the power pole. This may have been avoided if I had put new tires on the truck 2 days before I had planned to.

Drive safe and watch out for black ice.
