We’ve got a Sony CD deck in the pontoon. Plays MP3 discs, so there is never any shortage of songs. Also, it’s got a “line in” port for plugging in an iPod or other device. Works out great.
Make sure you buy one of the weatherproof covers! I learned the hard way. I think with the cover, an automotive stereo is fine. I think the marine stereoes are overpriced and unnecessary.
January 25, 2007 at 10:24 pm #528093MP3 player right now…will have a nice Pioneer in there by summer.
January 25, 2007 at 10:24 pm #528094any radio you have in there you can run an XM or Sirius off of and then turn around and use it in your truck too. I have had XM for over a year now and love it. The comedy channels can be a hoot too.
January 25, 2007 at 10:24 pm #528095Having experinced my Marine clarion (don’t have the model number handy), I have come to some conclusions.
1. I don’t like this stereo.
2. I do not like that you cannot seem to find a marine radio with a (cheap) wireless remote.
3. I’d really like the ablilty to play mp3’s off a cd.
4. Something, if not everything is not right.I’d go with a decent car audio deck something that has mp3 capibility, and a wireless remote, good quality marine speakers. I think speaker are going to hold back the sound quailty some. I think the car audio decks have better components in them and sound better.
My deck does offer some rca’s for sound in, which I could hook up an I-pod or anything else like a mini dvd player ( thinking about the kid here) SO I could listen to the mp3’s with my ipod.
Overall, I’ll probably just live with my stereo in my boat, it works, it plays cd’s, sirius ready (not that it means anything to me, radio or cd is fine by me) I think if I was going to install one I could do way better with car audio stuff, the one thing that does scare me though is having a regular car stereo and water, mostly rain being the big issue. I think you can get those water proof covers and I’d be willing to take the chance they are good enough, to keep the water out in the rain, but I’d still be leary. With the marion quality Clarion deck I have I don’t worry about it. I like my stereo’s to really rock, and this deck and speakers doesn’t seem to be able to do that without massive distortion, which may be a deck issue (power/processor), speaker issue or both. When I get my boat back from the shop, I’ll have some time to play with some options, I’m going to try out an amp since I have a couple laying around, and see if it helps, I’ll venture the guess it won’t, but maybe I’ll be suprised, I’d also like 2 more speakers in my boat for a total of 4, not sure I can bring myself to cut some holes for speakers and surface mounts take up more space and look like crap IMHO.
Stock radio in my ’05 Ranger 190 Reata.
January 26, 2007 at 12:15 am #528148My CD front plate warped in the sun last summer and won’t make good contact with the radio body – anybody have a CD player they want to get rid of?

January 26, 2007 at 12:44 am #528166I’m running portable XM sat radio in my boat. It broadcasts the signal to an FM station on my stereo. It works pretty good, nice to have when I’m in the middle of no where!
I also added a small powered sub woofer under the dash that gives my little Aquatronic speakers some bass.
January 26, 2007 at 1:22 am #528187Lip, I have a sony marine detachable face cd player with sony brand speakers…I love it, Johnny Cash is playin on the river all summer long..It sounds great and they stand behind their product…last year mid season it “went out” on me..brought it back where i bought it and i had a new one sent to me in no time…I did research on the net befor buying it and everything i heard was you get what you pay for so watch out for the cheap ones…Jay
January 26, 2007 at 1:47 am #528195Lip, I run an ipod through an fm transmitter. Rocking to the crue, or kicking back with Jimmy Buffett. 30 gigs at my disopsal.
January 26, 2007 at 2:12 am #528211Sirius satelite radio going in this year. If you know someone who already has it, they can add another reciever and it is only 5 bucks a month. Figure for that price its worth a try. You can also move from the boat to the truck or home if you want.
January 26, 2007 at 2:25 pm #528395I have a Pioneer CD player in my boat. It is mounted in the glove box to keep it out of the weather. Sure nice to turn on the radio when fishing is slow

January 26, 2007 at 4:23 pm #528455Here’s a link to an article talking about marine stereos and the best components to look for http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/ISEO-rgbtcspd/learningcenter/car/car_stereo/marine_stereo.html
There’s a Sony that’s XM ready so you don’t have to have a boombox and the antenna. I’ve had good luck ordering through them.
