Anybody have advice on using a thermostate to turn on fans mounted in house? Thinking it would be nice to push warm air down to floor without having to manually turn switch on and off. Thanks in advance.

Most thermostats are 220v,110v,24v and milli-volt. Unless your running a generator, 12v is going to be tough.

I used to run one in a old shack of mine. Had mine placed about a foot off the floor. Keep in mind if you set it at normal wall hight it is going to sence the temp there. It will still work like this but the temp reading is not what the floor temp will be.
Another option may be a dimmer switch on the fan and leave the fan on full time. Any air movement in a fish house is great.

Milli-volts. No outside power source. The voltage is generated off the pilot.

Exactly correct, I just replaced mine on the Empire Furnace – Direct Vent – Bought a Honeywell at Menards.
