Power chip for Ford 7.3 diesel

I have a 2001 Ford Excursion Limited 7.3 Diesel that I am looking to chip for more HP and increased mileage.

I purchased the Truck in Oct 2004 with 50K miles and now it has 104K. I had the transmission rebuilt in Aug 05 with a HD torque converter by a guy over in eastern WI and that’s (Transmission) been great.

This vehicle primiarly is used for towing my boat (85%+ of the miles) as I drive a small car to work. I am usually towing 5000 #+ with a full load of cargo (fishing gear) so I am looking for more HP and to increase my mileage. When towing, if I drive 65 I get 13-14 MPG 74+ I get 12 – 12.5. Empty at 65 I get 15-17. Dec 27-28 I drove my boat down to AR and then back home empty – 1700 miles round trip and I average 14.3 MPG and I averaged over 75 the whole trip.

Does anyone have any experience specifically with the 7.3 fords?

    Thanks in advance,

I reccomend quadzilla brand. They have an economy module that is safe for towing purposes. Anything more than what this chip adds and it is just a matter of time for problems. This chip adds something like 65 hp, don’t remember off hand about torque. But they typically see 1-4 mpg better fuel economy out of them. Type in quadzilla in the search area and it should come up. Good luck with your purchase!

I would get a tuner so you can tune it to whatever power level that you want. Most have several settings. I had a hypermax offroad chip and the power was incredible, but I had to remove it if I wanted to tow anything. I now have a tuner. I set it for max power when I drove to Mille lacs last weekend. I had a topper on a one ton truck that was full to the top, had four guys, and was able to get 16.5 mpg. Not too bad. Last week I was pulling my 30 foot flatbed. It only takes 5 mins to reprogram and the tuner does it all.

I would check with different shops that know Ford Diesels.

Just because you throw in a chip, it doesn’t necessarily mean “more power”.

My opinion is that I would get 3 different opinions from shops that know what they are doing, and then see if those 3 opinions come up with the same answer.

    If not, keep seaching around!

I would recomend the banks systom or the edge systom. Both have various stages of settings. I think the edge systom may even give you temp reading for the transmission which is a bonus. I have the 7.3 with a supper chip in it. horse power gain of 150 I think it makes a big differance. Seems to gain about 1-3 mpg.
    my 2 cents

Ted, I have the edge chip in my dodge diesel. I did some research and chose the edge over the banks for a couple of reasons. One was price, the second was that the edge has a digital readout without buying the palm handheld. You can setup the digital readout to watch the components you choose.

Install of the edge was easy, heck even I figured it out. The box is very adjustable with 5 different power levels. From best fuel economy to towing to get butt crazy blow black smoke and burn the tires.

Here is a link to the edge site.

My lowly to cents I would go with DP. If you want to read about tuners and the 7.3 go to the Deiselstop.com forums.

You will find out more information about the ford 7.3 and the 6.0 then you know what to do with. What really works and what dosen`t. Some of these guys are so techy it`s scary. The majority really like the DP tuners. Each one is set up for your particular vin no. About the same cost as the rest but custom for your particular vehicle and driving habits. When I get ready to buy one it will be a DP tuner.
