    Hi all

I have a Minn kota Maxxum 55 transom. I bought it last summer and at first it worked fine, but in the last couple of month there has been an increasing problem with the speed control. Instead of an immediate response in speed when turning the handle in small steps, nothing happens. And when I turn the handle even more, then speed drops or increases 30-50%. The problem is most severe when I decrease speed. Often the propeller will almost stop and then slowly build up speed again.
A friend of mine has the same problem with his Maxxum 55, but it is not as bad as in mine.

Have anyone had this problem and maybe know a way to fix it?

I live in Denmark and bought the motor in Florida, so it’s too expensive to return it for repair.

Yes I know, but they’re probably the slowest Minn Kota company in the whole WORLD. A friend of mine brought back a Powerdrive from the Florida trip (in June 06). It got broken in the flight back so he contacted Normark (Minn kota Denmark) and they told him that they would fix it and the travel insurance would pay for it.
Since then eight month and 12-14 emails/phonecalls has passed and still nothing has happened…

maxxum motors are the variable speed.. it sounds like the switch(handle) is getting dead spots or worn out. Its most common problem on foot control units(pedal), but the hand controls do it on occasion too. You can probably find the part for about $20 somewhere(maybe ebay?).. I would try that 1st myself to avoid a year without my trolling motor.

I had the same thing happen to my Maxum 74 this summer. Definitely dead spots in the handle. Also, when running it 3/4 to full throttle, it will drain both batteries, in less than 2 hrs, so I might have other issues as well. Motor is 3 yrs old. Anyone know where a good place is to get this checked out (Alexandria – Fergus Falls area)?
