Any body out there use Quantum Spinning reels? I was looking at the Catalyst and the Kinetic, the Catalyst has more bearings and is 20.00 dollors more, worth it? I have been using Shimanos, thinking of trying a different brand.

    thanks KLH

I’ve got a quantum ST4F that I picked up a couple years ago at Bass Pro in Chicago. Love it. Five bearings, smooth as a baby’s butt.

The only complaint I have would be that it is a ‘trigger cast’ and so the anti-reverse only has one stop. Other models have infinite anti-reverse and I would expect they would be more to your liking.

I have a Catalyst PTi and it’s the smoothest reel I own. Going to pick up another one to put on a new Avid I just bought. A guy at Joe’s told me it’s smoother than that 500 dollar Shimano they are out with now. My Sedonas are taking a back seat from this point forward.

I have a dissenting opinion…. here is a link to a thread on the kinetic reels from last fall on this forum.
However I also thought the reel was great until the anti-reverse stopped working

Kirt, I’ve been using Quantums for a while now because of price and features. I’ve had the bail springs break a couple of times, the reels loosen up after use, then along came the Kinetic and Catalyst reels. I bought a Kinetic last fall and totally loved it, then bought another this spring and then a week later bought a Catalyst. I don’t need to worry about the bail springs breaking anymore because of the new magnetic bail system. There is so many great things about this reel I love and it’s way ahead of the game for “price for features” that I urge you to check them out.

Hate to sound like a broken record, but you’ve got to try the Catalysts. I moved to Shimano after having problems with Quantums 3 or 4 years ago. This new Quantum Catalyst absolutely the best reel I have for under a C-note. (‘Course it helps that the first fish I caught with it was a 6 lb walldad!)

I also had a couple of Quantums that the anti-reverse quit. Called Quantum they gave me a address to sent them to, had them back in 10 days fixed and a Quantum hat thrown in. I think it cost me about $4.oo to send them back. Better that throwing them away.

I have a couple of the Quantum Energy Reels that I have used a lot. They are great when they are new but after a few years of use they start to loosen up. I also bought a quantum Response just over a year ago and the backreel switch isn’t working. Sometimes it just goes free and I can back reel all I want even when it is set to not allow back reeling.
I am not really brand specific, this year I have been using a Diawa Capricorn and a Shimano Symetre a lot and they are both awesome.

In general, I have little to gripe about Quantum products but I haven’t tried either of the Kinetic or Catalyst models. Has anyone been using the Icon spinning reels? Smooth as Gianni’s………….whoa………..uhhh……….what he said! Just wondering if they’re as durable as they are smooth?
