Any of you river runners use any kind of skeg guard to protect the bottom of your motor?

Skeg Guard for outboard?

I don’t know about the river guys, but Bob and I go up to a resort in Red Lake, Ontario that like all other lakes in Canada is a motor eater. The owner of the resort welded re-bar to the skegs of all his resort boats to protect the skeg and prop. Had the bar come way off so the prop never had a chance to touch rock. Looked like it worked pretty good, then again I try really hard not to hit rocks, and never had the opportunity to beat the snot out of his boats.
January 8, 2007 at 11:13 pm #519945There is a product called skeg guard which is a sleeve that slips over the skeg and bolts on. A buddy installed one over a chipped skeg and is very happy with it. I’m probably going to do the same this year with my boat. They aren’t cheap at $100, but I’ve had my skeg repaired three times so far and it’s cheaper than that!!

That’s to repair a damaged skeg for the most part.
What Steve’s talking about is a steel piece that potects the lower unit, prop, and skeg.
A friend of mine has one on his boat and it seems to work pretty good not sure what they call it though.

Question #2… Anybody have an opinion on Nissan outboards?
I priced Honda and Suzuki and Cabela’s Nissan price ($1819) for a short shaft 9.8 is looking awfully good to me!
January 9, 2007 at 3:25 pm #520197I run a ’96 50 hp Nissan on my boat. It was not my first choice, but I got the boat from family so did not have much of a choice. It was my brothers boat in Oregon, and they run many Nissans there.
I have never had any major problems with it. It is a little cold blooded, but I would rank it above the 4 Mercurys I had before it.
As much as I would like to complain about it, it has been a good motor. I can’t say much about the newer motors, but I can’t say anything bad about mine.
The only negative I can say, is that I changed fuel/oil filters on it, and there is not a dealer network for parts. Very hard to come by, and they are certainly not giving them away .
January 9, 2007 at 4:13 pm #520227Thanks for the feedback. The Nissan website shows a couple of dealers in the St Croix Valley but there sure are not as many as there are for the other common brands.
I had a new Merc 2 Stroke that I had a lot of problems with too.
January 10, 2007 at 10:28 pm #521084The product I was referring to can repair a broken skeg or protect a new one. It’s true that it doesn’t protect the prop any better than the original skeg, but it does protect the skeg itself from breaking when you hit something. Here is the website: skeg guard website
The river runner definitely looks like it would do a decent job of protecting the prop in addition to the skeg!
