I am going to buy one of these two boats and would like some input on which one you would buy, price comparable.
    1) Privately sold:
    2002 1700 Fisherman with a 115 Yamaha 4-stroke, loaded
    2) Dealer sold
    2003 1700 Fisherman with a 125 Mercury 2-stroke, would buy most options

First of all, good choice. My Dad has this boat and it is a great ride.

If they are a wash mechanically (ie: nothing wrong) I would lean toward the 4-stroke. I have a Yamaha 50 four-str. and love it. How do the prices compare?

If you are in Minnesota and buy a boat from an individual, you pay sales tax on only the value of the trailer when you register it. I believe that if you buy from a dealer you get hit for tax on the boat, motor, and trailer. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Last Year I closely looked at the Lund 1700 w/4 115 4 stroke
vs the Lund 1800 w EFI 150 Merc. The 1800 with a full load or pulling skiers would have been underpowered with a 115 4S. I wanted the additional space and power and went with the 1800 and the Merc 150. If I was buying the 1700, I’d go with the 4S Yamaha. It’s a perfect set-up for this boat.

I have the 1700 Fisherman with 115 Yam 4 stroker, plus the T8 kicker off the side. It is a good match for the boat, ride is excellent as is stability in rough water. I have it propped with a Yamaha SS 13×17 which pulls about 56-5700 WOT with light load and full trim. It pulls load of 3 with allgear and full tank out of the hole with ease, and fast. I am pleased with the fuel economy, startability and the smoothness of this engine, not to mention the quiet running. I’d vote for the 4 stroker.

LundExplorer, you are right about the sales tax when buying from a private party. Dealers get the full load on everything.

If you can afford it buy the Yamaha. I have one and love it.
