Looking to buy a GPS for under $200 (not including a map program). Just looking for suggestions on a brand and model to buy.

One of my students is selling his Etrex Legend with Topo and Streets software dirt cheap…if interested let me know I can talk to him….was gonna buy it, but not a priority right now….he has it on ebay right now, but if interested, I’m sure he would pull it off
January 5, 2007 at 3:00 am #518773In that price range, you really can’t beat the Lowrance H2O. ($169.99).
For another $100, you can add the Lakemaster chip and have a great fully functional GPS.
January 5, 2007 at 3:44 am #518790For hand held GPS i would go with Garmin Etrex Legend. i think its like 200 for just the basic model and it comes pre loaded with a map of the USA I had a lowarnce and i didnt like it one bit
January 5, 2007 at 4:06 am #518808TipUpsOnly, I see you’re a student so I don’t know if you can swing it but if you can move up in your price range just a little you can get one of the best handheld GPS on the market, the Lowrance H2OC. If you were planning to add a mapping chip, Jolly Ann Marine has a special package available that saves you a lot of cash. The package setup is what a lot of us use here. It’s what I use and it’s an excellent setup.
If that’s going to put you too far over budget then the black and white Lowrance H2O would be my other suggestion.
They are basically the same unit but the color really helps the mapping detail standout. Both come with the 12v power cable which is really handy too.
January 5, 2007 at 5:41 am #518832Wade, which chip are the guys using on Mille Lacs and Pool 4 that gives the best contours? It looks like the H2OC will accept several..thanks. Do you believe the H2OC is better than the Garmin 60CS?

I do like the H2OC better, if for nothing else, for the better mapping options. I think it’s a better value too.
I don’t believe the contours are all that great for P4 until you get in to the Lake Pepin area. Both Lakemaster and Navionics have the area surveyed but with the river changing so much it doesn’t lend itself to contour mapping as well as lakes do.
January 5, 2007 at 4:14 pm #518977I just got the H20 from Wade. I love the thing! Great unit/options for the money! Plus it does have WAAS too!
teamshady1Posts: 40January 5, 2007 at 7:26 pm #519111H20 Is the best. Cant beat the unit with all the feathers it has.
January 5, 2007 at 9:00 pm #519148and the H2OC is worth the extra $$ to give better clarity? If I was to only buy 1 chip, which is better? (Pool 4, Winnie, MilleLacs, Leech)
January 6, 2007 at 8:27 pm #519286Tipup,
I’ll agree with the majority and the lowrance h20 . I really like the system since it’s similar to the graph in my boat. Something to consider if you have current electronics in your boat. sticking with a similar system makes it easy to use. Just my two cents
January 6, 2007 at 9:18 pm #519292Lundgeye- yes the clarity with the color unit is definitely worth the extra money!! I would recommend the Lakemaster MN chip..
I have the H20C, and the MN LM 07 chip, and I have NO complaints- Got it from Wade!
January 6, 2007 at 9:24 pm #519294Thanks for all the input guys. Thinking about waiting until i can afford a more expensive unit. Seems like the thing to do.
timmyPosts: 1960January 9, 2007 at 5:36 pm #520267Tipupsonly – If you’d be interested, I have an older Garmin 12 that works fine that I’d sell reasonably. PM me if interested. I used this unit until I bought the H2Oc. It sure isn’t top-of-the-line, but it may be enough to tide you over until funds are more available for toy purchases.
