Sshhh! Keep it quiet – that’s supposed to be a secret!

Jig-a-bits are made by Jig-a-Whopper. They are basically an oval leadhead molded onto a Kahle hook. I really like them for tip-up fishing. I am not sure if they are still being made, but I hope so. Saturday eve up on the pond, I took a 25.5 and a 29.5″ eye on a orange/yellow jig-a-bit/fathead under a tip-up.

    Post and photos >>> Jig-A-Bits

I think B FISH N Tackle was thinking about carrying them.

Cabelas markets basically the same jig calling it the Canadian walleye jig.

Scenic Tackle also makes this jig. Give me a call or pm and I will be happy to fix you up.

Not all jigs are the same. I use the ones from Scenic Tackle because they Glow the “right” color. I have been using Jig-a-bits on my tip-up set-ups for 5 years now.

You will see in the video we shot on Mille Lacs how well they work. I prefer the Red Glow but other colors have there days. On Mille Lacs, on I use them when I fish shallower than 24ft. Once I get deeper than that I prefer a plain hook set-up.

Scott, would you be kind enough to explain why the difference in set up with depth? I would think you’d want greater visibility with the greater depth?

Well, honestly, if I knew EXACTLY why I would tell you why. But, from experience, it is tough to beat a shiner with a plain red hook and a split shot while fishing deep on Mille Lacs.

Once you get up on top of a flat, 24ft or shallower, I have yet to find anything better than the Jig-a-bit. For me it was just a matter of trial and error and fishing on the Mille Lacs a lot. 24 ft is kind of a magic depth on Mille Lacs. The water deeper than 24ft fishes much different than the water shallower. Some has to do with light penetration, some has to do with the attitude of the fish that inhabit each depth and their food sources I would guess.
