I am replacing my 70hp–1977 Evinrude with a late 80’s Johnson 90hp, I have been told it should match right up, and the controls should work as well. Any thoughts on this? I am wondering if I should also get new controls/cabels/steering etc..or should I just use what I’ve got..it works just fine, I am just wondering if there are signifigant advantages to updating controls? Any thoughts along these lines would be greatly appreciated! I am looking at purchasing a rebuilt motor, I believe its an 89′ johnson 90, any known problems with this motor?

If your controls are working properly and fit your new motor,go with them. Much less hassle than switching out.
I have not heard of any problem with that year class motor.

I don’t know the answer for that but if you call a boat dealer they would know. If they don’t match they can fill on the old holes with wood and sealer. Real easy to do as they stick a wood peg in the hole and use sealer to seal it. Works great. They did that on my old boat when I put a bigger motor on it and I never had a leak from the old holes. Thanks, Bill
