The water pump impeller on my motor is due to be changed. Looking at the service manual, this appears to be an easy enough do-it-yourself repair. Is this the case, or would it be better to take it in for service?

    Thanks.

just changed my impellar on my 135 optimax. had the guys do it where i bought it. i asked how difficult it was and after they told me i wish i would have did it myself. doesn’t sound to difficult but i guess if you don’t know much about outboards it could be. i would say try it yourself. atleast if you can’t figure it out you can take it in. although that could take away from precious fishing time!!

I’ve replaced them on a 6 hp and a 15. If you are at all machanical (taking off 4 bolts and replacing it the way it came a part), it’s very easy. If you feel at all uncomfortable, I would have someone do it for you.

Another thought would be to ask when you pick up the pump. The service dept. can show you an exploded view of the lower unit and you can see what it takes.

Good luck, but get it done soon…the fish are biting!

It is very easy to do,just 3 bolts. One bolt is under the cap above the trim tab. After the bolts are out you have to disconnect the pitot hose (helps to have an extra pair of hands during this). Then just make sure you put the shifter in a certain gear such as forward and then make sure the lower unit is also in forward when you reasemble. You should be able to do it in under an hour.

I agree, pretty easy. I did my Merc 150 lower unit in under 2 hours alone. If I had anoter set of hands, cut that time in half.

If you send me your e-mail address via PM, I’ll send you a set of instructions with pictures. (Sorry, can’t post them they are copy righted)
