I bought a pair of Cost-Delmar’s from Cabelas and love them! They have great customer service, too! I should have known better, but I got mosquito spray on my lenses and it eventually broke down the blue mirrored coating….sent em back and they re-coated them for free! Check em out…they’re in Cabelas catalogs.
November 27, 2006 at 6:51 pm #503769I mostly sight fish smallies on Mille Lacs so I have tried many different kinds of glasses.
Keeping it under 200 is easy as many manufacturers have great glasses in that price range. I use Costa Del Mar and Solarbats sunglasses. The main thing about glasses is fit, less light entering your eye from the side means better vision, a semi wrap is what I wear but you will need to find a pair that fits you.
The second biggest thing is lens color, Costa makes a great all around color with their vermilion tint. Solarbats also makes a great color with their mossback tint. I wear these more than any other brand.
I can not tell you what one brand is better than another, it really comes down to personal choice. Go to a good fishing store and try some on.
Good Luck
RonNovember 27, 2006 at 6:55 pm #503773Ocean Waves with the backwater green lenses are the best by far in my opinion. Costas are also good.
November 27, 2006 at 7:26 pm #503789Costa’s for me. It is hard to describe how nice of glasses they are unless you actually try them
November 27, 2006 at 8:55 pm #503822I’ve got a pair of these 70’s Rose Colored glasses, they don’t help me see the fish any better, but the world sure looks nice!
November 27, 2006 at 9:40 pm #503837Costa or Maui Jim…can’t go wrong! THe best glasses for under 200 bucks hands down!! Warrenty is excellent as well!!
Good Luck
Bob.
dtroInactiveJordanPosts: 1501November 27, 2006 at 9:56 pm #503845I would recommend sticking with the $12 walmart specials. Think about it, you can buy a new pair or two every year if you need to and come out ahead for quite a few years.
When I’m out fishing, I’m not at a fashion show and I’m sure not trying to impress my partner(s).
A polarized lens is a polarized lens is a polarized lens.
They both sink at the same rate too
Yes, I know the major players in high end glasses will replace if you scratch them or even break them…….but only to a certain extent, after the second or third time, they are not so friendly and they will charge you $50 each time, and they sure won’t send you a new pair when they end up at the bottom of the drink.
Spend your money on a new rod/reel, tackle or gps or something.
My two cents

Happens to me every time. Buy the cheap pair and I’ll havem for 10 years.November 27, 2006 at 10:23 pm #503864Quote:

You’d think so, but there is a HUGE difference. I sprung for my first pair (Costa Del Mar Wavekillers) this summer and I can’t even begin to describe the world of difference. Those things are fabulous!!!
I keep a cheap pair around for when the beer’s flowing, but driving and fishing, I love my Costas.
Dtro, you need more than sunglasses to see anything in the Minnesota River
November 28, 2006 at 1:54 am #503959Costa Del Mar Eliminators for me!! I sight fish smallmouth on Mille Lacs with them also……they just can’t be beat
Like Scott said, once you have worn a good pair of sun glasses, you really can’t use anything else
just my 2 cents!
shaylaPosts: 1399November 28, 2006 at 2:06 am #503967Check out the Costas…you owe it to your eyes! Those cheap Walmart glasses are just that…cheap. After a day of wearing those your eyes will become so fatigued you’ll think you were poked in the eye with a branding iron! Get the good stuff, you’ll find yourself taking better care of them and be sure NOT to drop them in the lake if you do!
November 28, 2006 at 2:33 am #503993My next pair will be the Ocean Wave Backwater green, now just need to sell one of the kids since I need the prscription ones…
Anyone in the market for a kid?? House broke and can mow
Honetsly I like H30’s and my buddies swear by their Natives.
November 28, 2006 at 3:32 pm #504196Nothing but Smith for me. They are outstanding and their repair/replacement policy is second to none. Been using them for many years.
December 11, 2006 at 8:27 pm #509773I would never use glass lenses. Just too many things flying around during boat rides and fishing to put shatter-able glass in front of my eyes.
I have a pair of Costa’s I love. The Vermillion color is the key. Kaenon and Action OPtics(Smith) Copper color is very close too. I just see underwater noticably better with copper tints than Amber. May be different for you.
Copper/brown/amber tints are better for your eyes too, as recent studies have shown the visible blue/violet part of the spectrum does more damage to your eyes than UV. Grey tints don’t cut these colors as much as the more brown shades do.

December 11, 2006 at 11:11 pm #509854I have always been a huge fan of the Ocean Wave Bandanas. I get headaches from ear pieces that are too tight. Theses have straps like goggles and fit snug around the sides of your eyes and cheeks blocking all light other than that though the lens. Great for sight fishing and running as the won’t blow off.

You only get one set of eyes! A good pair of sunglasses is a good investment for the future of your eyes.
StaleMackrelPosts: 443December 12, 2006 at 6:24 pm #510223Consumer Reorts did an evaluation of sunglasses sometime back which said, (paraphrased) that the cheap ones were as safe as the expensive one.
December 13, 2006 at 4:11 am #510538Safe as in…Protecting your eyes from a lure hitting the glasses?
Or, as in filtering out the sun’s harmful rays? I could believe the protection from lures/etc…but I am not sure about the sun’s rays.
