G Loomis Rod Question

Can anyone elaborate on rod quality.. I was looking at flippin rods. I looked at a rod with a Heavy action that’s 7’11” made by G loomis.. Then I noticed all these other “technique specific” rods. Then Bass rods, then Smallmouth specific rods !! Wow ! The flippin rod was $450.00 All the other ones we’re ranging from $200 +

Wow.. I might as well start the divorce papers now if I we’re going to buy one of those. Has anyone else tried these ? Are they magic ? How can a rod be made specifically for a jig & pig ? specifically for a spinner bait.. it’s so much money !

Then there’s the Quantum Accurist & energy reels.. That’s a whole different story with prices starting at $229 !!

    Can anyone elaborate ?

I’m not sure I’d pay 450 for a flippin stick unless I was independantly wealthy, but for some types of fishing they are definitely worth the extra dough in my opinion. I do alot of Carolina Riggin and for that I use a 7′ heavy action GLX. I can honestly say that the last tournament I won it was because of that rod. The fish were just barely picking up the bait in 15-20 FOW and the sensitivity of the rod allowed me to back off on them before they felt pressure from me trying to drag the bait. I’ve tried other rods for riggin but this has been the best I have found. As far as the technique specific rods go they’re giving these rods specific weights and actions that best suit the style of fishing they are intended for. I think for the most part, most of these rods are worth the little bit of extra money but there are some that definitely aren’t.

You can usually have the same rod built for 1/2 or just over 1/2 the cost of a factory rod would cost ..
I havent bought a rod in years, they were either made by HOF or made by my self.
I would get the rod # and see what it would cost for HOF to make before buying it …

    Just my .02 worth

Over the past five years I have been building an aresenal of Loomis rods, all I can say is that they are worth every penny. Friends that fish with me intentionally leave their gear at home so they can use my stuff. The feel of these rods is outstanding. I picked up the 7’6″ GL3 flipping stick and am very happy with it. The other great thing about Loomis rods is if you bust one, which I recently did (user error), they will replace it for $50 bucks, no questions asked. They also have a warranty service, unfortunately up to this point it has always been my negligence that has caused the break. I look at it this way, you pour so much money into trucks, boats, baits, and gas… Why wouldn’t someone spend a little extra to have premium rods.

If you ever break one, no matter if you snapped it over your knee. you call them and they send you a new one for 50 bucks and then you have to send the broken one back

I agree, its good to have for jigging and very sensitive situations, i wouldnt go buy a loomis trolling rod tho

their quality is something i have yet to see any compition

….and add to that the fact that your new replacement rod usually arrives in two days! No better service anywhere.

Totally agree Jeff. A custom built rod can be even more sensitive than factory built. And some builders offer warranties that are just as good or better.

    Mike,
What kind of warranty do the Setyrs have?

I’ve got a couple Loomis rods and several St. Croix rods. I love them ALL!! I think for the average guy a $50-80 rod is plenty. For someone who fishes a lot and starts to realize that “specialty” rods do make a difference, I believe most of us on this site use rods in the $100-250 range. To me, $400 is a little over-kill. The rod blank coupled with a good builder can give you the best of both. Case in point, look into the rods that Turk builds fors sale at Jimmy’s. NICE!!

I used to fish with loomis GLX’s- they are hands down an exceptional rod. I had many of them…Then they were bought by shimano- Shimano makes the majority of their stuff over-seas. I broke four loomis’ while I was fishing them, and it wasn’t user error- I had 200 wrapped up just in fixing costs.

I then switched to St.Croix- still made right here in the USA- Actually in wisconsin, I believe. I have broken three, st.croix’s which were my fault ( I am not talking breaking in a door, but just being less than smart with fish) and they were replaced for free. It is up to a st.croix tech to determine whether or not it was user error.

The IPC and ART technologies in the St.Croix’s are something that no other manufacturer has…and they make outstanding rods…

I am not trying to start a debate, just giving you my honest opinions- I have fished the best from both companies, and I prefer St.Croix- Price or “sponsorship” if you will has nothing to do with it, as I had/have deals with both companies.

Look them up on the websites…it explains how they are made for each type of fishing…

I LOVED the loomis spinnerbait rod!!

…technique specific rods, are worth every penny, no matter who makes the rod….!!!
