Best Headlamp?

I have a birthday coming up and number one on the list is a headlamp. I have a set of the cateyes, but I really don’t wear a baseball cap too often. Any ideas? I want it for spring/fall night fishing and also something in my portable fish house. I was thinking of something with some reasonable distance, but also flood light capabilites.

I lost the best headlamp I ever had. A Princeton Tec light. I was at Cabelas this spring and they dont sell them so I got a Browning. I forgot what kind of bulb this Browning has but thing will blind someone. Its lightweight and uses one of those $7 batteries. The lamp was $60. Its a good lamp but when it comes time to replace, I think I will get another Princeton for $25.

I second the princeton tec recommendation. I have a different model, but it’s unbelieveably bright and the batteries last forever!

I’ve only tried a couple headlamps…because I’m sold on the Everready lamp. I have 3 of them for guiding.

3 AAA batteries last 4+ trips. I use the two red led’s the most as it doesn’t blind people as much. The white LED is good for landing a fish…and the “spot light” gives off enough light for casting for cats.

Water proof and Walmart has them for 9.95.

    My 2 cents.

Same as Brian. Not that it is the best on the market, but for $10, you can’t go wrong and the red light option is nice. I have a few in my boat.

I love the “Cat’s Eyes” that clip to the bill of your hat! 4 disk batteries, and 3 bright LED lights are really nice. I get headaches from the straps on the other styles. They could improve the switch however IMHO. I develop a heck of a blister after a week of night guiding. These units are very light, and you do not even know they are attached!

Ditto on the Cat Eyes. I get an instant headache anytime I have a headband squeezing my brains out!

I also use regular small pen light clipped to my cap. Works great.

I like the catseyes also. N o head band is nice. Not the brightest light Ive seen. Last year I was also bringing along my 18volt Dewalt light night fishing. This was great to shine ver the side f the boat while trying to net a fish. Lit up the entire side of the boat. Going to be looking at trying a clip on style light this year. Some sort of big spot light that we can move around the boat and clamp it on where needed.

I own 3 of the princeton tec’s Derek has pictured. I use them all the time for everything whether fishing hunting or working. Very light weight.Bright little buggers too.

Another vote for the Cats Eyes. One very nice benefit is that if you have the hood up on your rain gear or parka, you can still see since it’s on the under side of your hat bill. I’ve got 3 or 4 laying around in various places since I’m horrible about remembering where I put stuff!!

It’s been a while since I have bought a headlamp, but I used to like Petzl. Do they still make a nice headlamp?

Did you mean Brian is cheap and effective, or the headlamp?

I keep a variety of lights in my boat. I really like the one that attaches to my baseball hat. The light that gets the most action though is the one that is taped to my landing net. I have never heard of anyone that said they had too many sources of light when out at night.

Taping a flashlight to the landing net, great idea.

I use the 5 LED Energizer. It’s bright and works well, however I really don’t like that I have to cycle through each function just to turn the darn thing off. First click is spot, then flood, then flood/spot, then red, then off. Four clicks every time.
I like the red, and would rather have a slide switch. Middle off, one side spot, one side red. That is all I need.
I’ve seen the 5 LED cat eyes, those throw off a lot of light, but they are a little harder to find than the 3 LED.

Meleen’s in Onamia has the 5 LED for $9.99 and it has a single switch for on and fricking OFF!! I love it! The green ones I had that everyone was complaining about had 3 LED’s but one was on, and one was strobe, and then off again.

I second that!! Friggin great idea to tape to light to the net. Any pics please??? I want to do that too! Because whenever we land fish now, one of us have to hold a torch or switch on the head lamp while at the same time either getting the net or hauling in the fish.

I found one that was about 4 inches long that fit perfect on the lock on my Frabil. it was a little LCD job had the on button on the butt. I tape it on there with black electrical tape. I can’t take credit for this trick as I read about it a couple years back on the IDA website:) It is pretty cool when a big cat comes up and you see eyes more than 6 inches apart.

I picked this one up at Evert’s, I think it was $9. Three AAA’s and eight LED’s.

Once I get a net that doesn’t bend when I lift a cat up…that’s the light that’s going on it.

Well the time has already come to replace this Browning headlamp. I really like the brightness but I’m only getting about 5 hours use out of the battery. Back to the Princeton Tec..

Picured above is the new Quad by Princeton Tec.. I’m going to give this one a try. Looks impressive..
