I am looking to move my son into his first compound this year. Has anyone tried one of these bows yet? Seem to be very forgiving with the variable draw length etc. I am wondering if the added bucks (Matthews) are worth it?

Our hunter’s ed class uses them for the kids on our field day. They are pretty good bows. How old is he and is he going to use it for hunting at all?

If he is…I’d look at the Parker Challenger …they are good, reasonably pricec bows. I just got my wife one and it is awesome. Another bow I would look at is Renegade SBD . The make one of the best youth/women bows around.

Everyone here knows I’m a Matthews guy all the way, but I also like to look out for quality and the pocketbook too when it comes to kids.

My girls shoot the Genesis bows at the local archery shop while I shoot my bow. They are great starter bows for kids and adults alike. I am not positive that I would let my girls hunt with them though Like Krisko mentioned, the Parker’s are a better bow if you plan to have your son hunt with a bow. If you are just looking for him to get the shooting skills and keep him practicing and enjoying archery, the Genesis would be a perfect bow

My kids tried them out last year. I would go with the PSE Spider personally. It can be adjustable up to 45# and can be set up right away for hunting. The Mathews is a nice bow, we are just more happy with the PSE.

Big D the bows I listed above are around $300 and up. There are other companies out there that have some that are a little cheaper…around $250. I guess if you can go to some archery shops and try them out or if you aren’t sure that you are going to use them a lot look for some used ones in the classified ads in the local paper. I know I got my wife set up with her bow, carbon arrows, fall away rest, case all for around $600. So if this isn’t something you want to spend that much on, used is the way to go.

I picked up a nice starter setup (Browning Midas) for my son on Ebay for $125 and very happy with it.

40# pull minumum before let off and a 7/8″ blade size on the arrows.
