Trolling tip

I learned something new from my dad this weekend while trolling cranks.

Putting a splitshot about 8 feet above the lure will really help keep weeds from working their way down your line to your crank. Weeds that hit your line above the lure will slide down to the split shot and then get hung up there. Eventually you do need to clean those weeds off, but it does give you more time with your lure in the water.

Just when I thought I knew it all…

Great tip! What works even better for me is a #6 (or so) hook tied in the line with a loop knot several feet above the lure. That hook will catch a ton of weeds before they’ll slide over it.

Been fishing with him for nearly 30 years, but I’ve only been paying attention for the past few.

I use this same trick during the high cotten periods of the darn cottenwood trees.
