…Well, I’ll compare my Opti Pro XS to an E-tec. 225 E-tec ho = 509 pounds dry. 225 Pro xs 505 pounds dry. Now what?? Heck, the regular opti only weighs 497 pounds dry. Does that mean the Mercs are faster? Of course not. Like I said before, its the boat/hull you put them on.

now this is comin from a tiller guy I have and probably will always lean on the side of the 4-strokes because of how they will idle all day and then get up and go but

with that said I am now shoping for a new motor (had yam.) and have had no problems with it till now it blowed up . the dealer is being a dink and so I am looking at merc. now

These topics are always the same.

Just change boat motor to boat, ATV, snowmobile, truck, shotgun…

Mine is better than yours and my dad can beat up your dad!

Are we going to start keeping count. Ask Bob Bowman how his Mer is running.

Hey Kooty………I bet I’m on your short list since not only do I own a Merc, but I tow it with a Dodge truck too!!

Everybody chooses what flavor of “Kool Aid” they want to drink. Who really is to say who is right and who is wrong?

HEY I still love my YAM

but like I said the dealer is being a DINK

in his words “””it blow-up because I was using Mobile 1 10w30 and not yam. oil”” B S ase. is ase. oh ya and because I had a wicks oil filter not a yam. oil filter

this is about the third time they have done this kind of crap to me so I am shopping the “local” dealer and they sell guess what Mercs.

Gentlemen: I’m looking to put a 75 hp tiller motor on a 175 navigator. I’ve looked at The etechs, yamaha’s, hondas, opti’s. The more I look and compare the more confussed I get. I like the quietness of the four strokes. I think the new tiller handle on the yamaha is great. The yamaha dealer says his motor will troll slower than the others and the etech dealer says his motor will idle slower than any body elses. I think the the new DI 2 strokes are cheaper to operate and maintain. I live in N E Iowa and the closet dealer to me handles Honda and Mercs. If I drive another 30 miles then I can get the other brands mentioned above. My current boat is a 1993 170 alumacraft competitor with the same year yamaha pro 60 and it has caused me no problems at all. I’m not trying to stir the pot I’m looking for usefull and positive information. Thanks for your help & info

What I was told is the two strokes will actually idle slower then the fours. Reason being the fours have to idle faster to keep up oil pressure.

Personally I belsive, with the new DFI motors loading up at idle on the two`s is a bygone thing. Freinds 150 Yammy HPDI troll all day and never miss a beat, hit the throttle and just go no lag.

The only advantage I see to a four stroke tiller is quietness at idle, about the same noise at high speed.

Like anything a person buys I don`t care what color it is ….If you get a good one it`s a good one ..If you get a lemon it`s a lemon.

When considering a new tiller motor, a few things to look at:

Look at the tiller handles themselves. Which ones are more user friendly? Also look at the tiller tensioning device. Some work better than others. When running in rough water trimmed down a 75 hp motor can be a handful if you can’t tighten the tiller.

As for 2 stroke dfi compared to 4 stroke in a 75 hp motor? 4 strokes are quieter and no smoke. Believe me, you notice it sitting in the back of the boat trolling all day. And although the dfi’s don’t smoke much, they still smoke more than a 4 stroke. I do like how compact the ETEC’s are. I’d have to assume you’d get some great performance out of it.

As for slow trolling speeds, the 2 stroke dfi’s do idle slower and probably troll slower. Yamaha has a great feature on their tillers call VTS. You can hit a switch on your tiller and increase or decrease your rpm’s by 50. I believe it bottoms out at 450 rpm’s?

As for the 2 strokes being cheaper to maintain? I couldn’t say for sure. With my 4 stroke Yami, I buy 5 quarts of oil and one filter a year, so maybe $30.00?

My 75 Yami trolls forward about 2.2 mph and backwards around 1.7. The forward speed is too fast for the fall so I switch to a 13 pitch aluminum prop to slow down. I have to be careful not to over rev the motor though with this prop.

Before the Yamaha, I had a Honda F75. Trolling speeds were about the same. Believe it or not, the Honda was smoother and quieter and I think it was better on fuel. It was I bit cold blooded but after warm up it ran great. The tiller tensioning device sucked though and it was harder to hold on to in rough water.

Never a problem with my Honda in 5 years of owning it. I have 200 hours on the Yamaha and so far its been just as good.
