First Time Changing Oil on 4 Stroke

First time going to change my oil on the yammy 4 stroke. Both the T8 and the 115. In fact, this will be the first time that I have ever changed oil for a 4 stroke engine. RIght of the bat, I know that there are some instructions in the outboard manual on how to do this. Off hand, I also know that I need to drain the oil first, change the filter, and then put in the new oil. Anyone have any advice or who can tell me how to do it so that I do not screw it up? Also, where do I dispose of the old oil? Thanks!

Just changed my T-8 and 115 this morning. The first thing you should do is get a large funnel and a short piece of hose that will fit over the bottom and hose clamp it to the funnel. Then you can set the catch container on the floor and just hold the funnel under the drain. Trust me this is a lot better than having the front of your shorts soaking up about half a quart of 10W-30 (last years experience ).Or else you will need a full bag of floor dry and a bunch of paper towels. My T-8 takes .8 ltr. and 115 4.6 to hit the full mark.

    Good Luck

He gave you good advice….get a funnel. I bought an offset funnel (large galvanized from Fleet Farm) with a big hole and screen in the bottom. The oil from the 115 comes out pretty fast and the first time I changed oil I used a small funnel and it overflowed…the joys of wiping up 2 or 3 quarts of that slimy stuff on the garage floor. The offset funnel does the trick, and the screen catches the drain plug and washer as it falls down when taking the drain plug off. It’s a little messy (the whole procedure) but gets a lot easier with the right tools. The T8 is a piece of cake, no tricks to talk about on that one.

OK. Thanks a lot. That was something I did not even think about. OK, will get the funnel. How about the oil filter? Did u get it online or from a dealer? Where did u dispose of the oil?

Oil ‘recycling’ sites are getting harder to find but a call to your nearest auto parts store should determine if they have the service or they will know the closest site. If distance to the store is not an issue, an in person trip will make it harder for a store or shop to ‘pass the buck’.

I don’t use a funnel on my changes but do put down a large tarp. I hold the oil tub up near the drain until I can determine where to set the tub on the ground. The spot will move as the flow weakens so you’ll have to watch it until its done.

Has anyone ever used an oil extractor pump to change the oil?

You do that only on a inboard where it is hard to get at the plug, my old Searay with a I/O was like that.
