I purchased a baitcast reel this spring and used it for the first time yesterday. I am an open-faced veteran so this was quite an adjustment. Any tips on getting a smooth cast. I kept on getting “birds nests” in the reel and the bait only went 10 feet!!!!

Thanks for the help! It’s nice to know I’m not alone! Looks like I have some practicing to do.

I’ve been fishing after work with a friend and we are both new to the baitcasters. How many rats nests I’ve had to pull out of that spool have been getting less. So Friday night someone trolls by using his like a pro, I should have asked, but we sat there in awe.

Keep at it, guys. Soon, you’ll be looking like a pro. I started the girlfriend on it a bit last year. She was doing fine. This year, she asks if she can use a Curado SF of mine. A bit leary since I can still backlash that thing if I’m not careful, I hand it over. Incredibly, she really impressed me! She caught on to the baitcaster way faster than I ever did!

One just needs to send there thumb to a higher education class. Once the thumb gets educated it never forgets how.

But of course I have been using baitcasters since I was fourteen. Back when they didn`t have all the fancy centrifical and magnetic spool breaks on them.

I love using baitcaters throwing cranks to wing dams for eyes. To me much better then using spinning reels IMHO.

Bought my first baitcaster last weekend. Friday night was a nightmare, but towards the end, I nailed it. Saturday and Sunday were just fine. Perhaps one bad cast in 30.

    Keys:

    1. Thumb
    2. Setting the magnetic spool drag to the weight of the lure. Easy way to do it: reel the lure in almost all the way, press the button, and set the magnetic till the lure slowly, and undercontrol, falls to the water. Need to do this for every lure before the first cast.
    3. Practice practice Practice.

    This is my humble opinion.
