Hey guys, I am gonna buy a new gps sonar unit and will either go with the Fish Elite 480 or the 500c or the 502c
My question is this, is it worth the extra $80 to go with the color???? These models are what I can afford, and a black and white will be about 11 steps up from what I have, I think the color would be nice to have, but I think the b&w has a higher resolution/biggerscreen. Any input would be apprecieated

    Thanks in advance

The sonar resoulutions are all great for freshwater up to 40 feet. For the gps portion the better the resolution the better. I got the guy at Cabelas to plug the Navioncs Premium chip in the fish elite 502c (320v x 240h) and the Lowrance LMS-332c (480v x 480h). The contour lines all ran together on the Eagle and still had seperation on the Lowrance. If you still want Eagle the Fishelite 640c is 640v x 480h but I can’t figure out if the screen is any bigger (5″ diagonal) and they didn’t have a demo unit. Being able to see the difference is going to cost me more (LMS-332c) but it sure will be worth it.

I have the 500c, and I think the color display is definately worth it, much easier to read in direct sunlight
I use a seperate stand alone handheld gps with the lakemaster chip for mapping.

    Brad,

There is a saying, I’ll paraphrase. Once you color, you won’t go back. I can’t imagine not having the color sonar or GPS anymore.

color is nice but buy the best you can for YOUR buck. Black and white is good also we are getting spoiled. Either way the up grade will be super.

I would not go back to black and white. Colour is the way to go. It is like computer monitors. No body can imagine using the green and black screens anymore. Same as the cell phone, now most cell phone LCD screens are colour too. Get colour if you can afford it. But if colour does not turn u on….then spend the money on the black and white. A lot of people still using black and white….for now.

I will have to go to Cabela’s or scheels again and check them out before I order one (from Jolly Ann of course!!) The difference in price isn’t a huge deal moneywise, I would love to have something more yet, but the wife capped out a limit, and I can squeez in just enough for the 500 or 502 color and not have to sleep in the boat!! Next question, how about internal or external gps antenna?? Let me have it what do you prefer/have and why do you like or dislike, Please feel free to answer the first ques. about b&w vs. color too
    thanks again everyone.

Ahhhhh the color glow is so nice when you’er sleeping in the boat Go color all the way, again you’ll never look back.

Personally I’m going internal antenea, so in winter when I attach it to my truck or atv, it’s ready to go with out messing with the antenea

Bought the wife a new wedding ring last week, there went my color sonar gps money, but it was totally worth it.

    Brad,

I’ve got the external antenna on my GPS unit. It wasn’t an option when I bought mine. I wish it was. Would have made using the unit in multiple places in the boat much easier. I have read most of the complaints on the 334C, seems some guys are having some problems while others don’t have any issues. I would search for a few of those threads.

Color is great in my opinion… I would go with the external antenna units yet. I’m still hearing folks are getting better reception with external antenna than the new internal antenna units.
