I’m going up to smitty”s to look a a new Lund 1675 explorer ss today. I’d like to keep my current motor for a couple of yearsas it’s only on the 2nd tank of gas. Will a 50 horse merc be able to power the boat or will I be way under powered? Thanks for any advise.

    Yellowdog,
Looks like the 1675 can handle a 90hp. I would think a 50hp motor would be small for this boat and performance would be marginal. I would recommend 70hp minimum for this boat. Is a motor trade-in a possiblity.

A trade-in is a possiblty but I’m afraid I would take a beating on a motor that new.

I would try the boat with your motor and see if you like the combination. You can always sell it later if it’s not right for you and upgrade to a larger motor.

You can always ask what they will give you for it and see what the price sitsuation is then. The 1675 Explorer is a very nice boat. Dave G. on the board has one with a 70 hp tiller on it. I believe Ecnock- Dave Koonce, 1675 Explorer has a 50 hp on it. If you can swing the bigger motor great, if you can’t swing both right now then a 50 should do fine until you can at a later date trade for the bigger motor. Might be easier to finance both at once [cheaper] than to have 2 seperate loans or may want to refinance later to get the motor added. Interest rates are down so that helps. Good luck and let us know what your complete new rig is. Thanks, Bill

I have the same boat but with a 70 hp tiller. This boat planes out very easily and I think you will be OK with a light load. With a 50 hp you will probably only get into the low to mid 20’s for max speed, but it should be fine for river fishing.

And don’t forget you may need to re-prop that 50 to get you up on plane easily and keep your rpm in the right WOT range. Sounds like the guys have given you good advice. Let us know how it runs…nice boat!

I agree, those 90’s are a strong motor. You should be very happy with that combination.

Jeff I think the 2 strokes have a little more power and they weigh a little less. Also are less money. I will put on a 6 hp Yamy 4 For trolling so I should be OK.Gas only hurts a little bit.

Sounds like a great new rig. I just read the post and you did the right thing letting go of the 50 Merc. My experience has been the Mercs don’t perform nearly as well as a Johnson/Evinrud anyhow. My 1700 Pro V with a 60 Johnson (I think it’s a 70 with a 60 cover) is less than 2MPH slower than my dads 1775 Pro v with a 90 Merc on it. That boat sounds great your getting and should serve you very well. Break it in right and get some northern blood all over the new carpet 1st day out!

Is Thursday the day Yellowdog? I picked up my new boat last year 8 hrs before opener. That was cutting it close. Good thing I bought it at Little Falls as the dealer was right across the river from Crestliner factory. I was suppose to pick it up the week prior but they told me the 1750 fishhawk max horsepower changed from 115 to 125 and that the spec tags where holding it up. I supposedly have the first boat that rolled of the line with the new tag.
That was nerve racking as I sold my other boat prior to pickup of the new one. Thought I would share my story after reading about your new ride. It sure brought back that memory for me from last year. Good luck and enjoy

The exact day isn’t known as we’re waiting for a motor delivery. My current boat is out of comission hence the need for a new one. On my way into town I get a bluff top view of the first 3 milles of pool 5. That and the pool 5 reports are just about driving me nuts. I may have to up my prozac dose if I don’t get delivery by sat.

Randy,I may have to go boat shopping with my dad this weekend so my boat may be available. Rent is cheap on it too. Any advice on where to go to find a nice used Pro-V tiller?

Explorer 1675 SS, I got that same boat and I love it. It is a great boat for small to medium size lakes. You got a great boat, take care of it and have fun. First thing I did with mine was to take out the stock plug and replace it with an external one. I don’t perticularly care for the design of the internal plug. Maybe yours is different than mine. Anyways, nice boat and good luck fishing this season.
