I had the chance to try out my new co-pilot system–what a dream! Installs in 2 minutes, and works flawlessly! The advantages are endless…you can mount the tiny little remote to the top you of your pole (easier with open face)…no more sore legs! Any body have questions or thoughts about getting one…I’d love to respond, but I will sum it up this way… GET ONE!

You know, Jonathon, I was all hot to get me one of them when I first found out about them a couple months ago. Then I got to thinking, If I’m fishin, and I do handle the pole with one hand and the crank with the other, Which hand is gonna fool around with them buttons to make the trolling motor go where I want it to go. So I talked myself out of getting one, atleast till someone who has one and can explain how making my hands do more is a better thing? I’m not tryin to be smart here, I’m just wonderin how you find time to cast, crank, and cast again while your somehow using your hand(s) to also tell the motor what to do. Let alone the idea of what landing that 10lb walleye can do to your mind and hands. I can see where it would be cool if you were trolling with the trolling motor, however most of my trolling is with the main motor. Well, anyway, someone set me straight. I know there’s at least 3 or 4 guys that are regulars on here that have one of these and I hope they can set me straight. Or am I gonna have to fork over $150. to find out?
March 28, 2003 at 10:48 pm #255760Here is my take on this accessory. The T-motor foot control pedal can still be plugged in and operable lying on the floor. The remote control is in my pocket, attached to my pole, strapped to my wrist or laying on a seat. I can still use the foot control and as soon as I need to move around the boat (To net a fish, grab a minnow, answer a call on the radio ect) I can control the T-motor from anywhere in the boat. As soon as you tap a key on the remote pad, it takes over. Then as soon as you step back on the foot pedal, it knows you are back there. Pretty slick!
Just another tool to help you be a better fisherman. To me it’s worth the money.

March 28, 2003 at 11:00 pm #255764Points well taken. One cool thought, if you buy your unit now, you get an extra remote free…SO…..your budy in the back of the boat also holds “The Power”…so when you are restling the “10#’er”–something I cannot personally comment on, yet anway–you simply let your side-kick take over.
Another cool aspect, is how easily (touch one button) you can program your remotes to run someone else’s Co-Pilot, so if you have your remote’s, and rod mounts..you bring them along when fishing out of your buddy’s boat…and whala..you are in business!
If you are second nature with your foot control…maybe it wouldn’t do anything for you.. As for me…my leg get’s sore after a day of balancing on top of the foot pad. I like to walk around..and you really can’t with a foot pad, I find it’s easier to sit down and run your foot controller than do so standing…
As for mounting it on your pole..I haven’t tried it on a bait caster (you mount it under and on the side of your reel) but, imagine you are holding your open face reel/rod in your hand…see where your thumb is? directly underneith your thumb lies your remote…no sweat!
Got to run for now..will write more later.
good luck with your decision!
March 28, 2003 at 11:39 pm #255766And here is my impression after fishing with it last Wednesday. The response time for turning the head on my PD55 is very fast, even faster than with the foot pedal (I think). It worked flawlessly but there is one thing I dislike. I wish it had some sort of feedback indicator on it that showed what speed the motor was set to. The corded version has that, but the wireless does not. I was able to precisely hover in the current or let the boat drag slightly or make progress against the current as I was casting. Overall, I really like the little thing but don’t try to run it with gloves, the buttons are too small. I would have liked (wish list) another version of this thing with large buttons, that could be laid down on a rod locker or rear deck (on my tiller boat) .
March 29, 2003 at 12:35 am #255770Thanks for sharing guys. I’m still in the ”thinking” stage and if I bought one I’d probably go with the corded one as I can’t see 150.00 for a remote contol for the trolling motor when I’ve already spent 300.00 for a corded remote steering for my kicker. A 100.00 for a corded one is bad enough and my foot pedel does have a 18ft. cord on it and I don’t use the front trolling motor as much as I love to troll but plan on using it more than normal this year so who knows. Us boys and our toys, gotta have em, lol. Thanks, Bill
March 29, 2003 at 6:13 pm #255820Used my 2 weeks ago in red wing.Works great I really like how much tighter it turns the boat. Before we got snow this week I was hoping to install my new gps this weekend Just got my lowerance 4000m mapping unit hope to try soon.

March 29, 2003 at 9:59 pm #255828OK guys. Anyone try the voice controlled trolling motor yet. I just looked at one at Cabalas today. Cant remember who made it but motor guide seems to stick in my head. I am going to do a little more looking into this. This cou8ld be real fun running these in a group of boats.
March 30, 2003 at 12:27 am #255833I had one on my MotorGuide a few years ago and did not like it. It required me to wear a mic and that in itself was always in the way. The other thing I didn’t like was the difficulty talking to my fishing partner with this thing active…..every once in a while it caught a word that I didn’t mean to direct at it. I much prefer the wireless co-pilot OR the wired co-pilot for Minnkota.
March 30, 2003 at 3:19 am #255840I seem to remember a picture of a mic on the box. I am glad someone heard of it. I was trying to find some info on it online and could not. Thought maybe I was seeing things today.
March 30, 2003 at 5:54 am #255849I talked to the guys at cabelas last year…they couldn’t even say anything good about it… Not reliable…etc.
