I have an X-71, fished the backwaters all weekend, and the dumb thing would never get a read on the depth. When I got out to deeper water it would work fine, but in 3-7′ depth’s (muddy bottom) it would never work…is this normal?
That will vary with bottom content. You say you were in the backwaters of muddy areas, and there probably was a lot of vegetation. Thats fairly normal. Try it in sand or gravel and and I’d be sure you’d get a good read. 
It may read better if you turn the sensitivity down. Something to try anyway…
My X71 reads fine no matter the bottom make up till the 1 foot depth, then it starts flashing 1.1 till I get to deeper water again. I’d try to find someone with a ducer like yours and switch them out to see if it’s a transducer problem. Also, makes sure your battery connections are clean and tight as well as the fuse holder.
