I just took my boat out for the first time this year, it ran great. parked it in my garage yesterday, and tonight I noticed a small (3″) puddle of oil dripping from the where the prop meets the lower unit (89′ evinrude 90hp outboard). I ideas what this is from? Exhaust residue? lower unit leak? I’m fairly retarted when it comes to mechanical issuues, hoping someone can help out…thanks!

What kind of oil does it look like? Is there water mixed with it? If so it could be exhaust.
If it looks thick, and does not smell like gas, pull off your prop, and look to see if you have fishing line along your spline shaft. It can get in there and wreck your seal in your lower unit.

I will go look closer, but it’s black, like motor oil under an ol’ ford pick-up, or a harley for that matter…(sorry). I don’t think there was water in it….hmmm, I will check–thanks!

Did you change lower unit grease last fall/spring?
    Give ‘er a sniff. Gas=exhaust.

If there was water in it, and it freezes, it can force your seal to break, or force oil through it, causing a leak.
Look to see what color your lower unit grease is. If it is black, that usually means carbon which is the byproduct of burning gas and oil which should point to exhaust.
