I havent used fireline before on any of my reels but i was wondering if this type of line works good on a baitcasting reel. I have heard that you can and that you cant. I will be using this reel to throw some bigger baits. Any opinions on what to use?

I have used Fireline successfully in both spinning and baitcast reels. I would suggest, however, that you check out Power Pro. It is more limp and seems to lend itself better to casting.

I have come to my personal conclusion that PP is better for casting, and FL for trolling. Both have their place.

so i can just put this type of line straight onto my reel i dont have to put some mono on it first, i thought someone said that the drag wouldnt work correctly with braided line on it.

Throw a few wraps of 10# mono on first. Don’t tie straight on.

I agree, if you don’t use a mono backer the line will slip when you set the hook…..(in other words the drag is non-existant)

hey starkj25, when me and my family go up to minnesota to fish, that is about all we use on baitcasters,it works great for trolling and carries the wobble of a crank bait well. i found it very strong also, caught me my largest northern ever on firline

If you’re a winter river rat… Fireline is better in cold weather as it doesn’t pick up water like a braid. PP is impossible in sub-freezing temps.

I can tell you fireline mono sucks imo, but i liked the fireline OK on my ice fishing reel, but i love the power pro for casting. Its got some serious sensitivity.

Is power pro new??? I am familiar with fire line/spider wire etc, but not power pro…

my suggestion? throw the stupid bait caster setup away, and put a heavy spin-casting reel on, save yourself a headache every ten minutes…

Just another note…not only do you need to put mono backing to avoid the line slipping around the spool, but also to help the pocketbook. The smaller diameter in the braided lines means it takes more to fill the spool, and the stuff aint cheap. I would go with Power Pro…worth every penny.
