Marine Radio Wiring?

I just installed my marine radio and ran it to the starting battery. After doing this I heard from others that have done the same and are getting the battery drained. I guess the radio is somehow drawing juice even when turned off. Is this possible? Am I going to need to rewire to trolling motor batteries or something else. I suppose I could unhook the wire from the battery when not in use .

    Any help is appreciated, Matt

It shouldnt draw amps when turned off. However it does draw alot when used on 25watts. It should be wired to a seperate deep cycle battery.

I agree with the big d…although I have my marine radio wired to my starting battery.

Off it drains zero, recieving it drains very little about the same as your fish finder or am/fm radio…

    BUT

when talking it will pull the power.

I’ll catfish (motor not running) for 6 hours with the am or fm radio on, the marine radio on…and talk very little. I’ve never had a problem…but my battery is getting older…

It’s always better to have the motor only wired to the starting battery.
