Berkley Vanish Line

I couldn’t leave good enough alone(Trilene XL) so decided to give some florocarbon line a try. I picked up some Berkley Vanish transition 8#. I conducted my own little strength test with the o’l fish scale and to my surprise the line is very strong (breaking at 11-12 lbs, but the knots break at 41/2-6 lbs. I tried many different knots and made sure the line was well lubricated when cinching the knots down. I’m wondering if I have a bad batch or if thats just the way it is. I just did the same test with Yo-Zuri Hybrid 8# and the line broke at 11-12 lbs and the knot did not break.

My break tests on Vanish were similar and the spool went in the trash. Then I was turned on to P-Line CX. I’m running their 6# line for leaders this year.

I’ve had nothing buy horrible experience with this line…….In my opinion, it is junk……

For whatever reason, knot strength is not there……Go with Seagur florocarbon. MUCH better line!!!

I bought a few spools myself 17 lb. I broke 2 fish off on the hookset, asked around and was told to loosen my drag a little and use a lubricated trilene knot. Fishing tomorrow, we’ll see.

I agree. I tied all my snells with Vanish back in 2002. I had a guide trip and all the snells were breaking on just about every fish at the knot. I tried three to four different knots. I was embarrassed to say the least and in the garbage it went.

To be honest. I tie all my snells with Stren Magna-Thin Green and also P-line carbon and havent really seen a difference in catch rates. Flourocarbon sinks so I like the Magna-Thin better.

Great, I’ve got several unused spools too, and pitched the receipts. Why does a guy always have to try something new, when you’re happy with what you’ve got?

I have used vanish for a long time now, that’s all I use for leaders, 6#, and I have never had problems with it. The only thing is when you are tying your knots you have to make sure you wet the line before you pull it tight, but that is good to do when you tie any knot with mono.

Kind of funny you guys mention the knot breaking with Vanish. I used Vanish for the first time at the Sturgeon Excursion. I used a 14 lb. for leader and as always wet the line before cinching down the knot. I had a fish on that was 50″+ , it cleared the water once, and eventually the line broke. Once I reeled up the line I inspected the leader and it appeared the knot broke. This was the only break off I had the whole weekend. Maybe it was nicked from other fish.

Don’t know for sure what happened but I know my knots do not break. Coincidence?

heres a good line testing trick for you guys. put on a pair of leather gloves and take a hunk of line and tie a regular old knot in it, but don’t cinch it down (leave a loop about the size of a silver dollar). Next, wrap an end of the line around each hand and pull the knot tight quickly and you can tell how easily the line will break. Try this with 8 or 10 pound Vanish and the line will break every time at the knot.

I use vanish for leader on my slip bobber rigs. I haven’t had any problems with it but that’s the only applicationn I use it for. For slip-bobbering in clear water, it works great, for me anyway.

I have purchased and used two spools of the stuff. My first spool was 6 lb. and I put it on one of my jigging rods. I tried and tried and tried to tie a jig on and it kept breaking off. It was pouring at the time, so the line was more than lubricated. I took all the line off and threw it away. That summer I used some of the leftovers for leaders and I had no problems. Spool #2 is 4 lb. line I put on my ultralight/trout rod. The line is on it’s second year and I have caught numerous trout, a few carp over 10 lbs., and numerous panfish and northerns. In that time I have broken off a dozen times on fish and every time it is at the knot. When I tie a lure on I usually have to tie the not 3 or 4 times before it doesn’t break.

Moral of the story: I don’t know why I deal with the crap and I will be trying something else. For some reason, I think the Vanish works better when it is warm out.

Have you guys had the same problem with Vanish Transition (gold box)? I had the same problems with the regular Vanish, I was just wondering if their was a difference in the two.

I don’t think Vanish is good on the spool or in colder temps for some reason. But, I do like it as leader line on the slip-bobber rigs.

I agree with Gary, I have 15# Seagur on some of my reels, got a crank bait snagged up on some timber and tried to break the line off, wouldn’t break, the hook straightened out instead. Very strong line.

The only thing worse than the break-strength of the Berkley Vanish Transitions is the memory it has. I used 6# on a spinning reel for early season ‘eye fishing and it looked like a “slinky” off the spool.

I hate to say it now,…but,…I’m a vanish fan! I’ve only used the regular. Every fish I’ve caught in the last 3 years has been on vanish. I use it religously in the winter and summer. I strictly use the trilene knot even though palomar boasts the best strength. The last time I snapped it was at the knot on a snagg on purpose. I’m beginning to think you guys have some drag issues
But hey, …”if it fits,…wear it”

I’ve been throwing plastics on 8lb gold box Vanish & cranks with 12lb.. I constantly keep an eye on my line, watch for tears, inspect for bumps, etc & re-tie.. Never had a problem but I’ve only had it for about a month & only made about 500 casts. No problems yet but will keep my eyes open.

EXACTLY , luckily you posted it because i would have been to lazy to type all that. i have straitened way more hooks than had break offs at the knot. i love the stuff.

Guilty vanish user here also. I really like the stuff, however I have come accross some bad batches that kept snapping when hand tested. I only use the 4,6 & 8#, but I use it year round.

I had a chance to put a couple of reels I just spooled with 6lb Transition Vanish under fire this past weekend. They spent about 8-10 hours catching 20-25 eyes, and I was impressed with no knot failures as well as smoooth casts, and that gold color is easy to see for an old fart like me. So far so good

I tried Transition last summer and didn’t really care for it. Not because of knot strength, but castiblity and memory. I tried 8# on spinning tackle. However, I also used 17# (regular vanish) on a baitcaster for flipping milfoil and lilly pads and thought it was great. I also use 6 and 8# for snells during the summber and thought it was great also. I did break a few fish off at the knot while tip-up fishing, but I think that was due to over zealous hook sets. I have gone exclusively to braded lines with vanish leaders in the summer time with no regrets.
    Just my 2 cents.

I just trashed the vanish off my rod. Took it off & switched. 20 feet up on the line I had a small tear in the line. I noticed it when my jig kept flying through the air yet my line snapped between the guides at the tear. I’m making a switch. Iaconelli mentioned he used silicone on his Vanish to soften it up.. anyone else ever tried silicone spray on Vanish ????
