Depth Finder question

Hey guys this is probably a dumb question, but I am sure someone can help me out anyway. I took my boat out for the first time today and was playing with my new fishfinger (Eagle 480)and I have my transducer mounted in the back of my boat. So when there is fish showing up on the depth finder are they located directly below me at the time or does in shoot the signal out behind it or niether. Thanks for the help.

I addition to these great links above, I’ll add that with color units you will also get a “stronger” reading for fish that are closer to the transducer. On Lowrance it’s yellow for stronger signals, red for medium, and blue for weaker signals.
