I can’t believe the gas consumption on the Yamaha EFI 4-strokes. Last time I was out, I let my 60 idle all day long and we ran from the high bridge to the dam twice on pool 4. My gas needle did not move. On the way home I had to top it off just to see how much gas I used. Less than 2 gallons.

Yamaha EFI 4-strokes

Nate told me that in 2 days of fishing with a Lund 1650 tiller with a Evinrude 40hp 4-stroke [boat hes running right now till the Pro V is ready] which included trips all around head of lake up to dam and back etc plus a trip down to Maidian Rock and back he only could put 4 gallons of gas in the boat. I think he feel in love with that 40 hp motor. I think he will be heart broken when he has to run a 90 hp tiller on the 18 ft Lund. Sounds like you are having alot of fun with your new toy Derek.
Thanks, BillApril 8, 2006 at 3:08 pm #436943Derek,
My F150 uses less gas than my old Merc. 60hp, 2 stroke did. If I push the F150 hard, WOT for a long period, it uses almost the same amount……Pretty nice.
April 8, 2006 at 3:58 pm #436949The newer motors like Etecs and 4-Strokes seem to get alot better gas mileage. When my 2-strokes start running out of gas I’ll have to find you guys with newer motors on the water to borrow some gas from.
Thanks, BillApril 8, 2006 at 5:57 pm #436968I have a 2002 115FS Yammy on my 1750 C-liner and the gas mileage is astounding to me and others that take trips with me. Sometimes I take 2-3 trips on lake Michigan one one tank…and my T-8 runs off the same 27gal tank.
April 9, 2006 at 12:01 am #437012I agree Derek. I’m very satisfied with the fuel mileage I get with my 115. The one problem is I have to fuel up so rarely, it has come back to almost bite me in the a couple times.

Maybe the gas will go bad before I use up a tank this summer.
With the gas prices on the rise again, having a few Yamaha four strokes are the way to go.
April 9, 2006 at 3:45 am #437051Anyone have any idea how much differance there would be in gas milage bettween a 2 stroke 90 Yamaha and a 4 stroke 90 Yamaha?
pyakePosts: 167April 9, 2006 at 4:48 am #437057For a good apples to apples comparison, Yamaha has bulletins for a 4 stroke and 2 stroke 90’s on a 165 magnum. The 2 stroke best mileage (on plane) was 5.4 mpg, the 4 stroke was 8.2 mpg.
The 2 stroke data is not from the HPDI motor, it is from the classic 2 stroke design.
April 9, 2006 at 12:57 pm #437082If I remember right??? Last July during break-in on my new Johnson 140 4-stroke I estimated my rig at 6.5 – 7 mpg with the very first tank of gas!!! I’ll check it when it goes back in the water next month…..with the pump prices these day’s it’s nice to run a 4 stroke!!!!
April 9, 2006 at 1:40 pm #437086Wow thanks Pete that is the exact info I was looking for
Ok I have another dumb question how do you check gas milage on a boat motor?April 9, 2006 at 4:29 pm #437100Quote:
I was thinking that today. I probably should get some Stabil.
Run some Seafoam in the gas. It removes moisture, stabilizes gas, and it cleans fuel system parts too.
April 9, 2006 at 5:08 pm #437103Is it ok for EFI? Was just looking at a can in my garage and it didnt say anything about EFI.
April 9, 2006 at 7:02 pm #437109I second Sea-Foam I also use it with every Fill up I have seen a huge improvement in the way my motor runs with adding Sea Foam. I have a 40 HP Evenrude and was never able to troll down to idle with out the motor dieing on me, I do not have that problem any longer ever since I started using Sea Foam, runs like a champ now.

I’ve been using it in my vehicles and my fuel injected sled. It won’t harm anything, and its better than isopropyl. You can also use it in four stroke engine oil prior to changing the oil.

Just bought a used boat, had rough idle, added Seafoam, cleared it up.
April 10, 2006 at 1:39 am #437185Derek,
What kind of speed are you seeing in your new rig? How do you like the idle contorol? How slow can you troll it down, or have you not had a chance to try it yet?
April 10, 2006 at 1:45 am #437188I get about 31-32 GPS with two guys, gear and 32 gallons of gas. I was surprised how much snap the motor has.
Yes I have used the trolling idle control. I can get it down to where you think its going to shut off but it doesn’t miss a beat. Trolling speed was hard to tell since this was on the river. But the RPM’s went down to about 550-650
pyakePosts: 167April 11, 2006 at 12:50 am #437461Steve,
If your sonar has a speedometer, it may also have an odometer counter on it that you could use to calculate your mileage. Also if you have a GPS, it may have a trip odometer function that you could use.
April 13, 2006 at 4:13 am #437799Thanks for the tips Bob and Pete
I have a hand held GPS (etrex) I will have to check to see if I can track milage on it.
