Anybody have any experience with this motor? When mine idles down below 700 rpm’s the overheat warning goes off, even if the motor is ice cold . If I disconnect the purple wire at the horn, the warning stops. Looking at the schematics, there are a few things it could be, but I was wondering if there is a troubleshooting procedure to positively identify the problem before I start dumping money into components. Your advice is appreciated.

Is the engine pumping water out the back of the motor below 700rpm? If not it can heat up real quick.

I had a 2000 90hp 2-stroke. It had two temp sensors on the block. My warning horn went off, and I wasnt able to go more than 2800 rpm. The pump was pumping. Ended up being a bad sensor. Sorry, can’t help on the troubleshooting part, though.

I have the exact motor. Mine went off and it turned out o be a faulty horn. (It melted!) The other thing I was told is that it is a low oil senser, so if the VRO pump is not working your engine may seize due to the lack of oil. I just replaced the horn, and the fuel/oil pump and stayed on the safe side. Dont need to spend 1,800 to rebuild it!

It is pumping water, and I tested the oil pump according to the manual to ensure that it is pumping oil also. Replaced the VRO pump and sensor because I got a good deal and I hear they have a reputation for going out. So that leaves me with a few things… Could be a bad temp sensor, a wire grounding out somewhere, a bad horn or a bad oil level sensor in the tank. Mud, do you remember how much the horn cost? That might be the easiest thing to replace next. Thanks for the ideas guys!

Saw the identical situation a couple of years ago – alarm after replacing the VRO pump – ended up being a tiny pin hole in the oil supply line (rubber hose) sucking enough air to trigger the alarm. If you didn’t replace the line I would check that.
